Reasons for poverty entry
The poverty dynamics report highlights some key reasons why people enter into poverty. These are
predominantly the effects of storms, floods and stagnant water, and the lack of, loss of, or inability to
work. This is not surprising. But entrants into poverty are also much less likely than the chronically
poor to be associated with agriculture and more likely to be associated with manufacturing,
construction, trades/repairs and other - presumably because of a loss of markets or job.
Based on an analysis of 2007, the following table shows which groups of people are most vulnerable
and therefore likely to enter into poverty.
