Unisa – a pillar of the academic community
Unisa is a university with a proud history; a story that began in South Africa but one that has now reached the
greater African continent and the world, thanks to the continued dedication and aspirations of our academic staff.
As a university, our reputation and academic ethos are a direct reflection of our people. People that are so
passionate about their fields of interest and supportive of learning in others that it seems to diminish their vocation
by calling them “staff” or “lecturers”.
Rather a philosophy of mentorship exists, particularly with our master’s and doctoral students. When you are
accepted to Unisa for master’s or doctoral studies, you are welcomed into our academic community – with a wealth
of knowledge, guidance and support to assist you in achieving success.
Our master’s and doctoral students, along with our academic community, are the lifeblood of this university. Our
focused approach, with several research initiatives in place, ensures that we consistently produce world-class research, in
many instances with strong local and African relevance. In addition, our number of NRF-rated researchers is increasing
exponentially year on year and we have shown a steady increase in research outputs over the last seven years.
In the section that follows we introduce you to our colleges and their fields of expertise, the Unisa
Graduate School of Business Leadership and the Unisa School of Graduate Studies. We also provide
a brief overview of the Unisa Library facilities and their benefits for master’s and doctoral students.
