Minneapolis First-Run Grosses Up<br />

and "Dr. No." came through nicely at indoor<br />

theatre boxoffices while "Poor White<br />

Trash" and "Shame." playing first run at<br />

nine Twin City drive-ins and situations which<br />

usually arc sub-run theatres, gave a 2.50 performance<br />

at the boxoffices. In a neighborhood<br />

first-run house, the reissued twin bill<br />

of ".Seven Brides for Seven Brothers" and<br />

"Because You're Mine" garnered only a<br />

Opening of the new house will again<br />

give the Paramount-owned circuit two Loop<br />

first-run theatres, replacing the former<br />

2.2fi7-seat Paramount Theatre which it relinquished<br />

and which has been demolished.<br />

Minnesota Amusement is leasing the Norsi.ir<br />

from the property owners. It is part ol<br />

the building erected on the site of the old<br />

ParanuHinl and it represents an cstinialcd<br />

investment of more than $500,000.<br />

The Norstar will be the first local house<br />

uith 70mm projection, although there arc<br />

.1 halt-dozen so equipped in adjoining Minneapolis.<br />

It also will be the first here to oiler<br />

roadshow engagements from time to<br />

time, according to MAC president Charles<br />

Winchell. Hitherto, roadshow films base<br />

been run in Minneapolis exclusively, coming<br />

here only after concluding their hardtickci<br />

runs in the other Twin Cit\.<br />

Martin Burnett Retires<br />

As SW District Chief<br />

ALBANY— Martin Burnett. Stanle\ Warner<br />

district manager supervising Albany,<br />

Troy and Utica houses for the circuit for<br />

the last five years, has announced his retirement.<br />

He and Mrs. Burnett will move<br />

hack to Ohio.<br />

Burnett's successor, named by SW zone<br />

manager Jim Totman, is Joe Stowell, manager<br />

of the old Ritz until it was demolished<br />

and since then in charge of the uptown<br />

Madison. Stowell will continue to supervise<br />

the Madison.<br />

A former assistant chief barker of the<br />

local Variety tent. Burnett held district and<br />

division manager's posts with Loew's Theatres<br />

in Columbus. Ohio; Pittsburgh. Pa.;<br />

Miami. Fla.. and Allanta. Cia. He also had<br />

served with that circuit in Texas, and his relirement<br />

marks the end of more than three<br />

and one-half decades in the industrv.<br />
