VANCOUVER<br />
Uca^y snows and wintry blasts have been<br />
closing drive-ins all over the territory,<br />
but the independent .-Xuto \'ue Trail has decided<br />
to buck the weather by installing incar<br />
heaters. On the mainland and \ancouver<br />
Island the Tillicum Victoria and Delta<br />
Richmond have gone to a weekend operation,<br />
as has the Surrey Drive in.<br />
"Born Free" continues to rack up outstanding<br />
grosses in the suburban and minor<br />
key situations. It was capacity over the holiday<br />
weekend in the Paramount. Kelowna.<br />
excellent in the Totem, North Vancouver,<br />
and Odeon, Duncan.<br />
Over in West Vancouver the Famous<br />
Park Royal twin racked up another excellent<br />
week. After six top weeks in the Park<br />
Royal, "The Wrong Box" moved to the Cinema<br />
to make room for a limited engagement<br />
of "Romeo and Juliet." "The Royal Ballet"<br />
feature was close to capacity on a hard-seat<br />
basis.<br />

Harold L'ndcrdahl, who resigned from<br />
General .Sound to go into other business, has<br />

Freed Plugging 'Gigi'<br />

HOLLYWOOD—Arthur Freed, president<br />
of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and<br />
Sciences since 1963, whose production of<br />
"Gigi" won ten Academy Awards in 1958,<br />
is making a round of radio interviews in<br />
connection with MGM's current rerelease of<br />
"Gigi" in a multiple situation.<br />

Canada's capital city were well satistied<br />
with the programs at Toronto for the<br />
annual convention of the Motion Picture<br />
Theatres .Ass'n of Ontario and the first<br />
presentation of Showa-Rama Canada which<br />
featured an industry show with many exhibits<br />
as well as the annual meeting of the<br />
Motion Picture Theatres .Ass'n of Canada.<br />
Leo Ouellette, manager of the Ottawa Regent,<br />
spoke with enthusiasm, for instance,<br />
regarding his experience, declaring he was<br />
greatly impressed by the three-day gatherings<br />
and tradeshow. Ouellette, who is<br />
rounding out his year as secretary of the<br />
Ottawa Managers .Ass'n, gave special mention<br />
to .Marshall H. Fine of New York, retiring<br />
president of NATO, for his luncheon<br />
address, an MPTAO feature.<br />
Svcnd I'cdcrsen, manager of the Ottawa<br />
Nelson, reported that "Doctor Zhivago"<br />
was into its last weeks of the roadshow engagement<br />
here which opened July 20 at<br />
this 2()th Century theatre with substantial<br />
rcsLilts being registered until the recent arrival<br />
of wintry weather. The run of this<br />
special production also is drawing to a close<br />
at Kingston, Ont.. where it opened October<br />
.s al the Odeon Hyland.<br />
The .Vulo-Sky Drive-ln, an Odeon operalion<br />
managed by Brian Jones, has called it a<br />
season, leaving two Ottawa ozoners on the<br />
acti\c list. These are the Queensway and<br />
Britannia, both of which are equipped with<br />
in-car heaters for winter comfort.<br />
Labor disputes in Canada continue to disrupt<br />
business activities and communication<br />
arrangements. On Monday (14) all flights<br />
of the Air Canada public service system<br />
came to a halt when machinists quit work<br />
after lengthy negotiations. A few days later<br />
the postoffice employes were scheduled to<br />
go on strike unless the government met<br />
wage demands.<br />
,Some Ottawa fans were able to see the<br />
heavyweight fight between Cassius Clay and<br />
Cleveland Williams at Houston, Tex., by<br />
closed circuit TV at the Ottawa Coliseum,<br />
where the prices were S5 and ,S4. The Cable<br />
\ision unit at Cornwall, Ont., also carried<br />
the bout.<br />
After an extended run at the Main Elgin.<br />
"Dear John" moved over to the Little<br />
lilgin for a fifth week. The new feature at<br />
the larger theatre is "The Professionals."<br />

For .several days of the week, special mattinees<br />
for children at the admission price of<br />
.*>() cents are presented at two Odeons in<br />
Ottawa, the Elmdale which has held ".Mor<br />
gani" for a fifth week and the Somerset.<br />
The latter teamed with the Queenswa\<br />
Drive-In for "Beau Geste."<br />

The Ottawa Regent scored a first big<br />
week with ".Alfie" which the censor board<br />
has classified for "restricted attendance.<br />
The Capitol has practically a whole week<br />
of stage shows coming up, as follows:<br />
"B.ucloot in the Park" on .Monday and<br />
Tuesday (28-29) and the Metropolitan Opera<br />
for three days, December 1-3, which leaves<br />
only Wednesday for the film policy.<br />
I'he free morning show Saturday (19) at<br />
the Ottawa Museum was topped by the Disney<br />
picture "Bear Country," which also<br />
was shown recently at local theatres.<br />
\^ith $6,000 in offered awards, the<br />
four Foto-Nite theatres finally found a minor<br />
winner after many weeks at the Linden,<br />
when Claudelte Decarie was able to claim<br />
SM)0 h\ her attendance. The total went back<br />
to S(i, ()()() for the coming week.<br />
The holdovers were fewer than usual with<br />
the arrival of blustery weather. They included<br />
"Doctor Zhivago." which rolled into<br />
its 17th week at the Nelson; "Morgan!" for<br />
a fifth week at the Elmdale and "Dear<br />
John" which was good for a third week at<br />
the Elgin. "Doctor Zhivago" also is doing<br />
well at Kingston, where it is into its second<br />
month at the Hyland. The Paramount at<br />
Peterborough got a seventh week on "The<br />
Sound of Music" which was starting its<br />
fourth week at the Capitol in Cornwall.<br />
The Famous Players Capitol in Ottawa<br />
had the National Ballet of Canada for two<br />
nights (14-15) and an early booking is "Barefoot<br />
in the Park" at S6 top, which follows<br />
a screen engagement of "Spinout" with<br />
Elvis Presley.<br />
At the National Museum the Bytown<br />
Film Club presented an oldie, "The Roaring<br />
Twenties," for members, while the National<br />
Film Theatre held forth with "'A Cozy Cottage"<br />
on the following night, this being an<br />
import from Hungary. The museum itself<br />
screened a group of films topped by "Three<br />
Coimiry Boys" for its free show .Saturday<br />
morning (12) for children 7 and over.<br />
The Cable Vision Co. at Cornwall, Ont..<br />
arranged coverage of the Clay vs. Williams<br />
heavyweight fight Monday night (14) direct<br />
from Houston, Tex., for eastern Ontario enthusiasts.<br />
Well known for his varied activities,<br />
Doug Pinder, president of the Ottawa Valley<br />
Theatre Managers .Ass'n, appeared in a<br />
new role during a showing of "The Wild<br />
.Angels" at the Rideau, when he climbed a<br />
Ui-foot ladder in view of the audience to<br />
kill a bat with a broom. "I should have been<br />
playing 'Batman,' " he said.<br />
