Replies to the Annual <str<strong>on</strong>g>Report</str<strong>on</strong>g> Questi<strong>on</strong>naire (ARQ) <strong>on</strong> trends in drug use are more comprehensive than <strong>on</strong><br />

estimating the number of drug users. The analysis <strong>on</strong> drug use trends for the year 2004 was based <strong>on</strong> the replies<br />

of 96 countries <strong>and</strong> areas, about the same number as a year earlier (99), up from 52 countries <strong>and</strong> areas in<br />

1992. Including informati<strong>on</strong> gathered from other sources (Government reports, UNODC Field <str<strong>on</strong>g>Office</str<strong>on</strong>g>s,<br />

UNODC’s <str<strong>on</strong>g>Drug</str<strong>on</strong>g> Abuse Informati<strong>on</strong> Network for Asia <strong>and</strong> the Pacific (DAINAP), EMCDDA, CICAD,<br />

HONLEA reports <strong>and</strong> local studies) trend data from 114 countries <strong>and</strong> areas from the basis for the subsequent<br />

analysis. The distributi<strong>on</strong> of countries reporting in 2004 was roughly the same as in previous years <strong>and</strong> provides<br />

a reas<strong>on</strong>ably good coverage across all regi<strong>on</strong>s.<br />
