3.2.2. Peru<br />

The share of Peru in global coca cultivati<strong>on</strong> decreased in 2005 to 30 per cent, down from 32 per cent in 2004.<br />

Area under cultivati<strong>on</strong> decreases by 4 per cent<br />

In 2005, the total area under coca cultivati<strong>on</strong> in Peru was estimated at about 48,200 hectares. This is a slight<br />

decrease compared to 2004, when 50,300 hectares of coca were cultivated. As in previous years, coca cultivati<strong>on</strong><br />

remained well below the levels registered in the mid 1990s, when cultivati<strong>on</strong> was above 100,000 hectares.<br />

Level of cocaine producti<strong>on</strong> remains essentially stable<br />

With an average annual yield of 2,200 kg/ha, the potential producti<strong>on</strong> of sun-dried coca leaf amounted to<br />

106,000 metric t<strong>on</strong>s, down from 110,000 metric t<strong>on</strong>s in 2004. Potential cocaine producti<strong>on</strong> of Peru was<br />

estimated at 180 metric t<strong>on</strong>s. This represents 20 per cent of the world cocaine producti<strong>on</strong> in 2005, a similar<br />

proporti<strong>on</strong> as in 2004.<br />

Prices remain c<strong>on</strong>stant in 2005<br />

In 2005, the prices for sun-dried coca leaf, coca paste <strong>and</strong> cocaine remained at the same level as in 2004. The<br />

price for sun-dried coca leaf increased slightly from 2.8/kg (2004) to 2.9 kg (2005), whereas prices for coca<br />

paste <strong>and</strong> cocaine hydrochloride showed no change at US$ 640 per kilogramme <strong>and</strong> US$ 890 per kilogramme,<br />

respectively.<br />

Eradicati<strong>on</strong> of coca cultivati<strong>on</strong> sec<strong>on</strong>d highest since 1999<br />

With over 12,000 hectares, Peru reported the sec<strong>on</strong>d highest eradicati<strong>on</strong> figure for coca bush since 1999, <strong>and</strong><br />

an increase of the area eradicated by 19 per cent. Eradicati<strong>on</strong> in Peru is d<strong>on</strong>e manually, <strong>and</strong> no chemical or<br />

spraying agents are used.<br />
