The tank-like molded casing and a rugged internal gear mechanism
are built for the harshest student environment. Runs on four
“C” batteries and has variable speed adjustment knob. External
power input accepts phone plug cable (included) to power the car
using a DC power supply, or a programmable power supply such
as the Xplorer GLX Power Amplifier (p. 7). See page 25 for more
applications.
Use the Motorized Cart (ME-9781) to study the conversion of electrical
energy to mechanical work. Measure the energy delivered to the cart’s
electric motor, and compare to the work the cart does against gravity
climbing a ramp. Investigate how varying the parameters (such as the motor
voltage and amount of weight lifted) changes the efficiency of the system.
In this experiment the Xplorer GLX® hand-held data logger controls
the output voltage of the Power Amplifier, and records all
the data, including power delivered to the motor.
The above graph shows effect of increasing motor voltage
on the efficiency, and the graph at left shows the
efficiency as a function of load lifted. The efficiency is
the ratio of the work done lifting the load divided by the
electrical energy used.
