office management software. Graduates are prepared
for positions as dental assistants in private, group or
specialist practices, insurance company receptionists
and dental laboratory technicians. With further
education, possible career paths include Expanded
Functions Dental Assistant (EFDA), Dental Hygienist
and Dentist. Certification exams in Dental Assisting
are available.
Designed for students with a strong background
in the sciences, this course focuses on research
methods and technical applications in the biological
sciences. In this high-tech, academically rigorous
program, science-minded students will learn
Good Laboratory Practices (GLP’s) while being introduced
to laboratory processes such as gel electrophoresis,
spectrophotometry, and basic techniques of
research. Topics of study will include concepts from
microbiology, genetics, cellular biology, and biochemistry,
and research areas will encompass everything
from genetic modification of foods to DNA analysis.
Course prerequisites include completion of Algebra II
with a grade of C or better and completion of Biology
and Chemistry with a grade of B or better.

Dental Assisting students learn to assist the dentist in
preparing patients and dental materials and by providing
chair-side assistance. Coursework includes basic
dental laboratory skills, terminology, head and neck

Health Careers students learn patient care skills that are
utilized in a variety of occupations in the medical field.
Students learn basic health care skills, medical laboratory
processes, medical secretary procedures, physical
therapy techniques and administration/dispensing of
medications. Additional coursework is provided in
anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, nutrition,
infection control, and legal responsibilities. In
Year 1 all students take a core curriculum. In Year
2 students are recommended for either Pre-Nursing
(State-Tested Nurse Assistant) or Medical Technology
(Phlebotomist/EKG Technician). Prerequisites for the
course include grades of C or better in Algebra I and
Biology, a GPA of at least 2.0 and an interview with
the instructors prior to admission.
