Chapter 10<br />

Safety<br />

Chapter 10 presents information on transportation accidents <strong>and</strong> casualties. Data<br />

are classified by mode <strong>of</strong> transport, with accident <strong>and</strong> injury rates provided to assist<br />

comparison across modes.<br />

Recent events<br />

• June 2007: Kerang level crossing accident (11 passenger fatalities).<br />

• May 2008: Sydney Harbour boat accident (6 fatalities).<br />

• September 2008: National Heavy Vehicle Driver Fatigue laws introduced in<br />

Queensl<strong>and</strong>, New South Wales, Victoria <strong>and</strong> South Australia, with Northern<br />

Territory <strong>and</strong> Tasmania to follow. Western Australia will retain it’s occupational<br />

health <strong>and</strong> safety approach.<br />

• November 2008: the Australian <strong>Transport</strong> Council adopts the National Road Safety<br />

Action Plan 2009 <strong>and</strong> 2010.<br />

Future plans<br />

• Early 2009: ATC will prepare Regulatory Impact Statements on a single national<br />

system for rail safety regulation, maritime safety regulation <strong>and</strong> heavy vehicle<br />

regulation.<br />

• 2009: a national ‘keys2drive’ program will be rolled out providing help to learner<br />

drivers <strong>and</strong> parents.<br />
