Road<br />
This chapter presents a range <strong>of</strong> statistics on road transport including road usage <strong>and</strong><br />
Australian road vehicle fleet characteristics.<br />
Recent events<br />
• March 2007: Albury-Wodonga Hume Highway bypass was <strong>of</strong>ficially opened.<br />
• July 2007: Pacific Highway upgrade—Brunswick Heads to Yelgun completed.<br />
This 8.6 km upgrade finalised the ‘missing link’ <strong>of</strong> continuous 60 kilometres <strong>of</strong><br />
uninterrupted four lane highway from the Queensl<strong>and</strong> border to Byron Bay.<br />
• December 2007: Princes Freeway—Pakenham Bypass opened to traffic.<br />
• June 2008: Tugun Bypass completed. Between Tweed Heads <strong>and</strong> Currumbin, the<br />
bypass included a four hundred metre long tunnel under an extension <strong>of</strong> the<br />
Gold Coast Airports runway.<br />
• September 2008: Pacific Highway—Bonville Deviation. Construction <strong>of</strong> a new dual<br />
carriageway segment <strong>of</strong> Pacific Highway south <strong>of</strong> C<strong>of</strong>fs Harbour was completed.<br />
Future plans<br />
• 2009–10: the Australian Government announced in its 2007–08 Budget that it will<br />
invest $22.3 billion in Australia’s l<strong>and</strong> transport system from 2009–10 to 2013–14<br />
through AusLink 2. AusLink 1 will cease in 2008–09.<br />
• 2009: the Caboolture Motorway upgrade to six lanes from Brisbane to Caboolture<br />
is expected to be completed.<br />
• 2009: Perth—Bunbury Highway is expected to be completed.<br />
• 2010: construction <strong>of</strong> the new Northern Expressway in Adelaide between Gawler<br />
<strong>and</strong> Port Wakefield Road commenced in September 2008 <strong>and</strong> is expected to be<br />
completed by late 2010.<br />
