• The matted apron around the wrestling area shall extend a minimum of 5 feet between out-of-bounds lines<br />

when two mats are side by side.<br />

• The matted apron around the wrestling area shall extend a minimum of 5 feet from the out-of-bounds line and<br />

any obstruction such as a table, bleacher or walls.<br />

• Photographers using still or motion devices, excluding official video review equipment, shall not be permitted<br />

within 5 feet of the edge of the wrestling mat.<br />

The matted apron around the wrestling area shall extend at least five feet<br />

between out-of-bounds lines when two mats are side-by-side and at least five<br />

feet from the out-of-bounds line and any obstruction such as a table, bleachers<br />

or walls.<br />

Since shrinkage occurs in wrestling mats, it is recommended that when<br />

purchasing or reconditioning a mat, the wrestling area be a minimum of 34 feet<br />

in diameter.<br />

The entire wrestling area and apron shall be the same thickness, which shall<br />

not be more than 4 inches nor less than the thickness of a mat that has the shockabsorbing<br />

qualities of a 2-inch-thick hair-felt mat. All mats that are in sections<br />

shall be secured together.<br />

1.9 Institutional Game-Management Responsibility<br />

It is the responsibility of the home institution’s game-management personnel to<br />

ensure that the wrestling mat(s) and surrounding facilities meet all regulations.<br />

The meet referee, or the head referee of a tournament, shall verbally alert home<br />

management of any variance from the stated facility and mat requirements, with<br />

questions and/or disagreements being resolved by the participating institutions’<br />

representatives.<br />

The host game management shall determine if official mat-side video is to be<br />

used. The host shall provide notification to participating coaches before weighins.<br />

Home game management shall see that recorded music not be played, bands<br />

not perform and artificial noisemakers not be used during wrestling action.<br />

Photographers using still or motion devices, excluding official video review<br />

equipment, shall not be permitted within 5 feet of the edge of the wrestling mat.<br />

1.10 Starting Lines<br />

There shall be placed on the mat two 1-inch starting lines, one of which shall be<br />

in the center of the mat. The lines shall be 3 feet long and 10 inches apart. Two
