RULE 3 / CONDUCT OF MEETS AND touRNAMENTSWR-23<br />

3.4.2 Coaches’ Attire. The wearing of jeans, T-shirts, sweatshirts/sweatpants<br />

and noninstitutional logoed warm-up suits (top and/or bottom), headwear<br />

and similar apparel are not suitable attire for coaches during dual and<br />

tournament competition and, therefore, are prohibited. Institutional logoed<br />

tops/jackets are permissible. Each coach in violation of this rule shall<br />

be penalized under control of mat area. (See Rule 3.13.4.) Further, the<br />

coach(es) in violation shall not sit in the designated reserved zone for<br />

coaching if the prohibited apparel is not replaced with suitable attire. (See<br />

Rules 3.4.1 and 7.7.8.)<br />

3.4.3 Medical Personnel Attire. Medical personnel must be appropriately<br />

attired. The wearing of shorts, jeans, T-shirts, sweatshirts/sweatpants and<br />

noninstitutional logoed warm-up suits (top and/or bottom) headwear and<br />

similar apparel are not suitable attire for medical personnel during dual and<br />

tournament competition and, therefore, are prohibited. Violations shall be<br />

penalized under control of mat area. (See Rule 3.13.4.)<br />

Note: The National Athletic Trainers’ Association strongly encourages athletic<br />

trainers to dress in a manner befitting their profession.<br />

3.5 Intentional Delay During Premeet Period<br />

A team intentionally delaying its appearance on the mat beyond five minutes of<br />

the established meet starting time shall have one team point deducted.<br />

3.6 Prematch Period and Procedures<br />

The prematch period is defined as from the time a contestant steps onto the mat<br />

until the first period of the match begins, as indicated by the referee’s whistle.<br />

Before starting the match, the referee will direct the contestants to shake hands in<br />

the traditional handshake fashion. Failure to comply with prematch procedures,<br />

and other acts of unsportsmanlike conduct, will result in penalization for<br />

unsportsmanlike conduct according to Rule 5.4 and the Penalty Table.<br />

It is recommended that each team’s competing contestants be introduced by<br />

name and weight class before the start of a meet.<br />

3.7 Duration of Matches<br />

For all competition, matches, including wrestle-back matches, shall be seven<br />

minutes in duration, divided into three periods, with the first period lasting three<br />

minutes and the second and third periods two minutes each. The time of the<br />

match is continuous, except when the referee stops or starts a match. (See Rule<br />

1.1.) A default, disqualification, fall or technical fall terminates the match. At the<br />

conclusion of the first period, the referee shall grant the proper wrestler choice<br />

of position to begin the second period, which shall be started as soon as possible<br />

by the referee. Upon expiration of the second period, the referee shall grant the<br />

appropriate wrestler the choice of position for the third period, which shall start<br />

as soon as possible. (See Rule 3.9.)<br />

3.8 Starting the Meet<br />

In dual-meet competition, the wrestlers must be ready to go onto the mat<br />

immediately when called by the referee. The wrestler to be sent onto the mat<br />

first shall be determined by the premeet disc toss. If the even-numbered matches<br />

(second, fourth, sixth, etc.) are selected, the coach would send a wrestler onto the
