RULE 5 / INFRACTIONS<br />
hands or one knee to the mat in order to release the offensive wrestler’s lock,<br />
and the referee shall not call a violation if the lock is held in such cases.<br />
5.10.2 Stopping the Match. The referee shall stop the match when it is obvious<br />
that the defensive wrestler will not complete an escape or reversal. If the<br />
defensive wrestler is successful with the escape or reversal, the match shall<br />
not be stopped to award points.<br />
5.10.3 Stopping Time Advantage. Time advantage shall be stopped at the time<br />
the referee signals that the offensive wrestler has an unfair advantage, such as<br />
locked hands, other technical violations (except when warning or penalizing<br />
the defensive wrestler for stalling or the offensive wrestler while in the<br />
standing position, or fleeing in the offensive position) or illegal holds. The<br />
referee is to signal this violation by giving the locked-hands or illegal-hold<br />
signals as shown on the Referee Signals chart at the end of the Illustrations<br />
section.<br />
5.11 Figure-Four Scissors<br />
The figure-four scissors is a technical violation when applied by the offensive<br />
wrestler around the body or around both legs of the defensive wrestler, or around<br />
the head, with or without the arm included, in a neutral position by either wrestler.<br />
(See Illustration No. 29.)<br />
The referee shall stop the match when it is obvious that the offended wrestler<br />
will not complete the takedown, reversal or escape. If the offensive wrestler<br />
completes the takedown, reversal or escape, the match shall not be stopped, and<br />
points shall be awarded as in interlocking of hands.<br />
5.12 Leaving Mat Without Permission<br />
It is a technical violation to leave the mat without first receiving permission to<br />
do so from the referee.<br />
5.13 Fleeing <strong>Wrestling</strong> Area<br />
Fleeing or attempting to flee the wrestling area, or forcing or attempting to force<br />
an opponent out of the wrestling area as a means of avoiding being scored upon,<br />
is considered stalling. Both wrestlers should make every effort to remain in<br />
bounds. Fleeing occurs anytime a wrestler avoids wrestling by intentionally going<br />
or trying to go out of bounds, by pulling or attempting to pull the opponent out of<br />
bounds or by pushing or attempting to push the opponent out of bounds.<br />
5.14 Toweling Off<br />
A timeout for toweling off perspiration during a match is a technical violation.<br />
5.15 Grasping Clothing<br />
Grasping of clothing, the mat, equipment or headgear by a contestant is a<br />
technical violation, and any advantage gained thereby shall be nullified.<br />
5.16 False Starts<br />
Making false starts is a technical violation. The sequence of penalties will be:<br />
5.16.1 First and Second Violations. Visual caution, signified by a “C” formed by<br />
the forefinger and thumb.<br />
5.16.2 Third and Subsequent Violations. One penalty point for each occurrence.<br />
The sequence of penalties is inclusive with incorrect starting positions.
