Khallid’s speech also attacked gays and the pope (“the old no-good
Pope—you know that cracker, somebody need to raise that dress up and see
what’s really under there”), and created a furor. Farrakhan, who had repeatedly
cautioned Khallid to tone down his rhetoric, was compelled to discipline his
deputy. He suspended Khallid from his duties and condemned his rhetoric but
not the “truths” that he spoke.
On February 23, 1994, Khallid spoke at Howard University, the “black
Harvard”; Malik Shabazz, a law student at the university, prepared the audience
for the main attraction with the following demagogic call and response.
“Who is it that caught and killed Nat Turner?” Mr. Shabazz asked.

“I’m going to tell the truth to the world. ... If you rejected Jesus, if you lied
on him and you tried your best—and you did cause his assassination and his
crucifixion—if you renounced Jesus Christ, how are we now to put any
