Mission Statement<br />

Develop more energy-efficient and environmentally friendly highway transportation<br />

technologies (for both personal and commercial vehicles) that meet or exceed performance<br />

expectations and environmental requirements and that will enable America to use significantly<br />

less petroleum and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Accomplishing the mission will benefit<br />

both the fuel demand and replacement sides <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Department</strong>'s energy security equation,<br />

enabling more productive use <strong>of</strong> the energy consumed.<br />

Target Market<br />

Vehicle Technologies Program (VTP) research and development (R&D) addresses needs <strong>of</strong><br />

purchasers and manufacturers <strong>of</strong> both personal transportation (cars and light trucks), and<br />

commercial vehicles (medium and heavy-duty trucks and buses). R&D is focused on energy<br />

storage, lightweight materials, aerodynamics, power train efficiency, and alternative fuel<br />

capability will overcome cost and performance barriers to support rapid market penetration.
