COMMENTARY I. GLOBAL WINE IMPORTS: Global wine imports in 2006 were 8.56 billion liters (951 million 9-liter cases) and are estimated to have increased to 9.00 billion liters in 2007, equal to a 1.0 billion 9-liter cases. 4 The following table compares global imports with global wine consumption in 2002, 2006 and 2007: 5 GLOBAL WINE CONSUMPTION AND IMPORTS 2002, 2006, 2007 AND % CHANGE (LITERS 000000) % CHANGE 2002 2006 2007 6 2007/2002 2007/2006 Global Wine Consumption 226,179 241,553 245,600 8.6% 1.7% Global Wine Imports 69,954 85,636 90,000 28.7% 5.1% Import % of Consumption 30.9 34.7 35.4 14.6% 2.0% The preceding table indicates that wine imports are gaining an increasing percentage of global wine consumption. This is the result of an increased level of wine consumption in non-wine producing countries and a decline in wine consumption in wine producing countries during the period 2002-2007. Growth of wine imports, during the period 2002-2007 has been the most significant in China (+272%); Russia (+75%); Italy (+39%); Czech Republic (+40%); United States (+34%); Canada (+24%); France (+15%); United Kingdom (+14%) and Germany (+9%). II. WINE IMPORTS IN TWENTY-TWO (22) SELECTED COUNTRIES: The 22 countries analyzed in this section of this report are those that have been emphasized for market promotion by the California Wine Export Program. 7 Tables 1-22 summarize the wine import situation in each of the selected countries. Each table indicates the value, volume and value per liter of imports for 2006 and 2007 and compares the changes between the two years. The twenty-two leading import suppliers are listed for each country. The supplying countries are ranked according to the value of their imports in the destination country in 2007. Each table indicates the share (%) of the value and the volume of the import market which each supplier country represents. The tables also indicate the share (%) of the volume that each country represents in the total market. The total market analysis assumes that consumption is a total of imports and locally produced wine. Unfortunately, reliable data is not available on the value of the total market in any of the countries. The United Kingdom has been the largest market for US wine exports for several decades. Logistics related to US exports to the UK have changed significantly in recent years. Increased quantities of US wine are now being shipped bulk to Italy and France for processing and bottled prior to shipment to the UK. The following table summarizes the volume of US bulk table wine exports to Italy and France in 2006 and 2007: US BULK TABLE WINE EXPORTS TO FRANCE & ITALY 2006 & 2007 (LITERS 000) YEAR ITALY FRANCE ITALY & FRANCE 2006 53,712 1,109 54,821 2007 52,558 3,538 56,096 In the analysis of the UK market in 2006 and 2007, bulk table wine exports to France and Italy have been added to “direct” UK imports from the US. Concurrently, wine imports by the UK from Italy and France have been decreased by the same quantities that UK imports from the US have been increased. After the foregoing adjustments, US imports by the UK ranked fourth in value and the third in volume in the UK import market. In 2007, US imports represented 11.3% of the UK wine market, an increase of 6.2% compared with 2006. The value per liter of all UK wine imports was $4.13 in 2007 compared with US imports at $2.63 per liter. Prices for UK wine imports from the US in 2007 declined by 3.3% compared with 2006.
