Solvay is an international industrial Group active in Chemistry, where the electrolysis
chlor-alkali is present for over a century (since 1898). During this period, the group has
suffered a lot of transformations (a plastics sector has appeared and, later on, a
pharmaceuticals business that was sold in 2010) and has grown motivated by providing
solutions to sustainability. Solvay is present in almost every continent (50 countries) and
is the global leader in many of its main products.
Solvay Portugal operates an integrated small plant that uses its differentiated situation
(small, flexible and with some of the main processes used in Solvay Group) to combine
strong human and financial resources in R&D, mainly application of new innovations to
be replicated all over the group. For example, the high rate H2O2 plant was tested and
optimized in our plant; Solvay Póvoa was the first plant to have membrane technology.
Now we are preparing the future. Fully compliant with the REACH directive, the Solvay
into all our business activities the triple requirement of sustainable development:
economic growth, employment and social progress, environmental impact. Before 2020,
the Solvay Group intends to reduce most of its emission parameters by 20%.
