Pressemitteilung NEWTOPIA: The State of Human Rights Ausstellungseröffnung in Mechelen (Belgien) 31. August 2012 NEWTOPIA - The State of Human Rights stellt als große, den Menschenrechten gewidmete internationale Ausstellung zeitgenössischer Kunst eine positive Bestandsaufnahme dar, die in aller Komplexität untersucht wie sich Gegenwartskünstler mit dem Thema auseinandersetzen. Die Ausstellung schließt an die lange Beziehung zwischen Kunst und Menschenrechten an. Für die künstlerische Leitung zeichnet NEWTOPIA die in Brüssel lebenden Kuratorin Katerina Gregos verantwortlich. NEWTOPIA ist vom 1. September bis 10. Dezember in Mechelen (Belgien) zu sehen. Die Ausstellung dokumentiert anhand der künstlerischen Beschäftigung mit den Thema die Entwicklung der Menschenrechtsbewegung und die Bedeutung, die ihr seit der Nachkriegszeit zukommt – einen besondere Stellenwert nimmt vor allem die veränderte Auseinandersetzung mit den Menschenrechten ein, vor dem Hintergrund ihrer wachsenden Bedeutung seit den 1970er Jahren. DIE AUSSTELLUNG Die Ausstellung zeigt Arbeiten von über 70 international anerkannten Künstlern mehrerer Generation, die sich unterschiedlichster medialer Ausdrucksmöglichkeiten bedienen und untersucht die subjektive Herangehensweise und Vielseitigkeit, in der Künstler sich mit den Grundsätzen der Menschenrechte auseinandersetzen. NEWTOPIA ist gegliedert in vier Themenbereiche und fünf Einzelprojekte, darunter zwei groß angelegte Auftragsarbeiten für den öffentlichen Raum. In der Ausstellung befinden sich auch zahlreiche Arbeiten, die speziell für NEWTOPIA entwickelt wurden. Die Ausstellung zeigt sowohl junge, aufstrebende Künstler wie Ninar Esber (Libanon), Diango Hernández (Kuba), Ganzeer (Ägypten), Marina Naprushkina (Belarus), Kader Attia (Frankreich/Südafrika) wie auch eine Vielzahl an historischen Beiträgen, unter anderem von Hans Haacke, Mona Hatoum, Leon Golub, David Goldblatt, Pablo Picasso und Andy Warhol. Etwa die Hälfte der teilnehmen Künstler kommt nicht aus westlichen Staaten, viele stammen aus Ländern, in denen die Menschenrechte ein akutes und häufig brisantes Thema darstellen, wie beispielsweise Olga Chernysheva (Russland), Ali Ferzat (Syrien), Taysir Batniji, Khaled Jarrar, Wafa Hourani (Palästina), Nikita Kadan (Ukraine), Hayn Kahraman (Irak), Boniface Mwangi (Kenia), Sun Xun und Zhou Zixi (China).
