Message from the Dean As the Anne and Elmer Lindseth Dean of the Johnson School, I’m delighted to report that we have had a terrific year. We’ve made great progress in several areas, further strengthening the qualities that make the Johnson School unique. Faculty and staff. Over the past year we have added many new faculty and staff members, building our capability in many academic areas and key staff positions. Several of our current faculty won major awards for their research and teaching. Overall, I am very proud of our faculty and staff, and we will continue to improve. Executive MBA programs. We began our first Executive MBA program in 1999 with 32 students. This summer, based on a record number of applications, we welcomed 66 outstanding students to our New York City area program and 105 outstanding students to our Cornell-Queen’s Executive MBA Program, offered in partnership with Queen’s University in Canada. These programs help us to reach senior executives working in many businesses across North America. Resident students’ “3 Cs” Curriculum. Hiring new faculty members enabled us to offer 15 new elective courses. In a very successful, inaugural capstone event, the “Personal Success Program,” we offered graduating students an opportunity to network with our school’s Advisory Council and to prepare for their careers as leaders. Community. A strong community is a hallmark of the Johnson School. To maintain and build this community, we initiated “Sage Socials” every Thursday during the semester and built on traditions at the school. Many current students met with over 400 alumni, families, and friends during Reunion 2008. Careers. We want to ensure that each of our students gets the employment offer that is right for them. This year, we created new positions in the Career Management Center for industry experts in marketing, finance, and consulting. In June, we gave newly admitted students a head start on their career research by offering career panels in these three areas. This spring, I wrote to alumni asking for assistance, and we received over 100 job leads for our students. In addition, staff made calls soliciting job postings and interviews with many new companies. Looking ahead. In the coming year, we will continue to modify the curriculum in all programs and to hire outstanding new faculty and staff. We are building more capability in our Center for Global Sustainable Enterprise and Entrepreneurship@Johnson (both closely connected with related efforts across Cornell University), in global business, and in our Parker Center for Investment Research. We have several high-profile speakers already lined up for 2008–09, including Sprint Nextel CEO Daniel Hesse, MBA ’77, Deloitte CEO Barry Salzberg, and Johnson & Johnson CEO Bill Weldon. This spring, I began gathering ideas from alumni, faculty, staff, students, and corporate partners to look at ways in which we’ll build and change as we form our new strategic plan.
