Murren & Sons Co. Inc.); and GSU student Christopher Prince. Fishing Fun in Florida The fish on the West Coast of Florida needed to be wary of NUCA anglers this fall. Both NUCA of North Florida and NUCA of Southwest Florida hosted annual fishing tournaments. NUCA of Southwest Florida hosted its event Sept. 16- 18 at ‘Tween Waters Inn on Captiva Island. It was superbly organized by new Fishing Tournament Chairman, Bob Russell and the tournament committee, Aaron Hunt Branch, Brett Eckenrode, John Wirka and Tim Wise. NUCA of North Florida honored Craig Carp, a retired Marine who served three tours in Iraq, at its annual fishing tournament on Oct. 11 in Jacksonville, Fla. Tony Zebouni of Regan Zebouni P.A. devised the idea of sponsoring a boat and asking the Wounded Warrior Project to invite a soldier to join the event. The organization sold $50 raffle tickets The GUCA Education Committee awarded $2,000 in scholarships to three construction management students studying in Georgia at its Fall Quarterly Meeting and Trade Show in Atlanta on Oct. 27. Junior and senior level students attending four-year colleges and majoring in construction or engineering were eligible to apply. Since 1995, the association has awarded more than $143,000 in scholarships. “GUCA scholarship opportunities help open the door to students to complete their educational goals and hopefully gear their construction-related education to the much-needed utility construction industry,” said Scott Brumbelow, GUCA Assistant Executive Director. This year’s recipients were Allen Lenard Carter, a senior majoring in construction management at Southern Polytechnic State University, and Christopher Prince and Julia Brooke West, both seniors majoring in construction and management at Georgia Southern University (GSU). for a chance to join Craig and Captain Raymond McCauley on his 19-ft boat. Lauren Atwell and his son L.T. were the lucky winners. Thanks to Regan Zebouni for its generous donation and to Hampton Inn and Suites on South Boulevard for donating Craig’s hotel stay. And our special thanks to Craig for his service to our country. NUCA of North Florida will be making a donation in his honor to the Wounded Warrior Project. NUCA news Florida and Nebraska Chapters Feature Clay Shoot Challenges Both NUCA of Nebraska and the Suncoast Utility Contractors Association (SUCA) hosted successful clay shoot challenges this fall. Nebraska’s Sept. 16 event, held at the Oak Creek Sporting Club in Brainard, Neb., was its second annual event. Its 10 teams geared up for the challenge with a home-cooked meal and then set out for one of North America’s top 20 courses. Each station on the course replicates different shots encountered in the field. Tom Cockle, Bob Cockle, Rad Dobson and Derek Bookstrom made up the winning team. Tyson Vogt, Steve Gruber and Fred Matulka were the second place team and Jim Connell, Tom Welsh, Brett Wawers and Travis Lienemann were the third. Special thanks to the prize donors: Cabela’s, Gana Trucking and NMC. Also, a special thanks to the reception and shooting station sponsors: Rinker Materials, Untied Rentals, Midlands Contracting, Road Builders Machinery and HD Supply Waterworks. Under a perfect blue sky, SUCA held its sixth annual clay shoot challenge at Tampa Bay Sporting Clays on Oct. 21. About 50 participants enjoyed the morning contest followed by a barbecue lunch, raffle prizes and awards. The members of the winning team were from Spivey Utility Construction and MWI Pump Rental. Shooters from Keystone Excavators and Ring Power Corp. took second place. SUCA always honors its “conservationist” — the player who was, one might say, most off the mark. That prize was awarded to Bill Taylor of Caterpillar Financial Services Corp. Ken Montague of Site and Civil won the shotgun raffle. Congratulations to all the winners.
