to the usual evolutionary pattern of successful species with wide distribution, namely<br />

that they arise <strong>in</strong> a s<strong>in</strong>gle place and spread out from there. As Gould puts it, “No one<br />

envisions proto-rats on all cont<strong>in</strong>ents evolv<strong>in</strong>g together towards improved ratitude.” 13<br />

Nevertheless, how the Great Leap Forward, 14 as Jared Diamond calls it, occurred,<br />

is an unresolved evolutionary question. I will now exam<strong>in</strong>e what anatomy and behavior<br />

reveal to us of the Modern stage of becom<strong>in</strong>g human. <strong>The</strong> “Ariadne’s Thread” I will<br />

endeavour to follow, <strong>in</strong>to and back out of the labyr<strong>in</strong>th, will l<strong>in</strong>k various aspects of the<br />

emancipation pr<strong>in</strong>ciple work<strong>in</strong>g through the human spirit. It is this approach which is<br />

the ma<strong>in</strong> anthroposophical contribution to the subject.<br />
