4.2.11.2 Objectives<br />

i. Community Education. Collaborate with Local Authorities in reaching out to community groups for a<br />

more-proactive participation <strong>of</strong> community in planning and development, and improved knowledge <strong>of</strong><br />

community groups on the role <strong>of</strong> town planners/town planning as well as the planning process through:-<br />

a. Organizing seminars, conferences, workshops and symposiums;<br />

b. Taking part in any public participation programmes for Development Plans (Structure Plan, Local<br />

Plans and Special Area Plans) in explaining further the role <strong>of</strong> communities in planning process. For<br />

a start, focus will be in Klang Valley/Greater KL.<br />

ii. Community Activities. Collaborate with Local Authorities and community groups in Local Agenda 21<br />

(LA21) activities and other activities relevant to town planning and the <strong>Institute</strong>; and<br />

iii. Advisory. Provide assistance and advisory service to community groups in particular residents<br />

associations and underprivileged minority groups on matters related to town planning.<br />

4.2.11.3 Committee Activities<br />

a.) Permanent Member <strong>of</strong> Local Agenda 21 Committee<br />

The Committee represented MIP at the following committees; in which MIP is a permanent member: -<br />

i. Putrajaya Local Agenda 21 (LA21) Committee<br />

ii. DBKL Local Agenda 21 (LA21) Committee<br />

b.) World Habitat Day <strong>2012</strong><br />

MIP was on the jury panel for the World Habitat Day Competition (Habitat Scenario Analysis Competition)<br />

organised by Ministry <strong>of</strong> Housing and Local Government. The competition, targetted at primary and<br />

secondary schools as well as higher learning insitutions, aimed at imparting knowledge on issues <strong>of</strong><br />

human settlement faced by cities today.<br />

c.) Community Outreach and Education<br />

The Committee was active in supporting programmes by other Standing Committees where participation<br />

<strong>of</strong> the community groups was required. Such programmes have been aimed at, amongst others, (I)<br />

widening avenue and opportunities for communities to participate in city planning and governance, (II)<br />

educating communities on their involvement in planning, (III) educating communities on current issues or<br />

concerns particularly in the aspect <strong>of</strong> sustainability and low carbon cities.<br />

Two key programmes that the Community Development and Participation Committtee (CDPC) is still<br />

actively supporting are the MBPJ Livable Community Initiatives and the Kettha Low Carbon City<br />

Framework Initiatives. The role <strong>of</strong> the CDPC in these two programmes is to help facilitate seminar<br />

sessions and teach-in sessions organised by the relevant MIP Standing Committee for the initiatives.<br />
