4.2.11.2 Objectives
i. Community Education. Collaborate with Local Authorities in reaching out to community groups for a
more-proactive participation of community in planning and development, and improved knowledge of
community groups on the role of town planners/town planning as well as the planning process through:-
a. Organizing seminars, conferences, workshops and symposiums;
b. Taking part in any public participation programmes for Development Plans (Structure Plan, Local
Plans and Special Area Plans) in explaining further the role of communities in planning process. For
a start, focus will be in Klang Valley/Greater KL.
ii. Community Activities. Collaborate with Local Authorities and community groups in Local Agenda 21
(LA21) activities and other activities relevant to town planning and the Institute; and
iii. Advisory. Provide assistance and advisory service to community groups in particular residents
associations and underprivileged minority groups on matters related to town planning.
4.2.11.3 Committee Activities
a.) Permanent Member of Local Agenda 21 Committee
The Committee represented MIP at the following committees; in which MIP is a permanent member: -
i. Putrajaya Local Agenda 21 (LA21) Committee
ii. DBKL Local Agenda 21 (LA21) Committee
b.) World Habitat Day 2012
MIP was on the jury panel for the World Habitat Day Competition (Habitat Scenario Analysis Competition)
organised by Ministry of Housing and Local Government. The competition, targetted at primary and
secondary schools as well as higher learning insitutions, aimed at imparting knowledge on issues of
human settlement faced by cities today.
c.) Community Outreach and Education
The Committee was active in supporting programmes by other Standing Committees where participation
of the community groups was required. Such programmes have been aimed at, amongst others, (I)
widening avenue and opportunities for communities to participate in city planning and governance, (II)
educating communities on their involvement in planning, (III) educating communities on current issues or
concerns particularly in the aspect of sustainability and low carbon cities.
Two key programmes that the Community Development and Participation Committtee (CDPC) is still
actively supporting are the MBPJ Livable Community Initiatives and the Kettha Low Carbon City
Framework Initiatives. The role of the CDPC in these two programmes is to help facilitate seminar
sessions and teach-in sessions organised by the relevant MIP Standing Committee for the initiatives.
