Water Conservation Program
Central Philippine University has an
ongoing program for rainwater
harvesting. The capacity to be gathered
is expected to be increased as the
school build more tanks. Repair of
leaking faucets is a regular part of the
maintenance program.Some toilet
bowls were changed to air-flush type
to save on water. Also, five hectares of
the Maasin Watershed that serves the
water needs of Iloilo City and
neighboring towns have been adopted
by CPU. CPU has planted trees in this
area to conserve water.
Greening Program
With its 24-hectare campus and a
19-hectare farm, CPU has long been
greening both its campus and farm.This
program is evident in its various
gardens and greening initiatives. CPU
was declared a Tourism Site by the
Iloilo City Council (Iloilo Council
Resolution No. 2001-1140), making
CPU the first and only university in the
Philippines to be declared as a tourism
destination by a local government unit.
Situated in a 24-hectare campus in Iloilo City, Central
Philippine University (CPU) has a butterfly garden, several
vegetable gardens, a Frutas park, a Millennium Tree park, a
material recovery facility and other facilities that promote
stewardship of the environment. CPU pioneered the offering
of environmental science subjects and has a BS
Environmental Management program under the College of
Agriculture, Resources and Environmental Sciences. We also
pioneered in launching a Program on Solid Waste
Management.
CPU’s no-smoking campus hosts the air quality monitoring
station, the Region 6 Affiliated Renewable Energy Center, a
Knowledge for Development Center that includes
environment management among its focus areas, the Iloilo
Rice Husk Center, and an Appropriate Technology Center. Its
University-based TV channel has a regular EcoForum. Five
hectares of the watershed that serves the city and its environs
have been adopted by CPU.
CPU has a strong outreach and linkages both in government
and non-government agencies. The University is supporting
the Bulabog-Putian National Park at Dingle, Iloilo in
conservation and other outreach activities. We pride to be
the first to establish a garden with various species from all
over the world of Moringa plant.
The advocacies and accomplishments of its students, alumni
and personnel are a testimony to CPU’s stand on the
environment.
