Water Conservation Program<br />
Central Philippine University has an<br />
ongoing program <strong>for</strong> rainwater<br />
harvesting. <strong>The</strong> capacity to be gathered<br />
is expected to be increased as the<br />
school build more tanks. Repair of<br />
leaking faucets is a regular part of the<br />
maintenance program.Some toilet<br />
bowls were changed to air-flush type<br />
to save on water. Also, five hectares of<br />
the Maasin Watershed that serves the<br />
water needs of Iloilo City <strong>and</strong><br />
neighboring towns have been adopted<br />
by CPU. CPU has planted trees in this<br />
area to conserve water.<br />
Greening Program<br />
With its 24-hectare campus <strong>and</strong> a<br />
19-hectare farm, CPU has long been<br />
greening both its campus <strong>and</strong> farm.This<br />
program is evident in its various<br />
gardens <strong>and</strong> greening initiatives. CPU<br />
was declared a Tourism Site by the<br />
Iloilo City Council (Iloilo Council<br />
Resolution No. 2001-1140), making<br />
CPU the first <strong>and</strong> only university in the<br />
Philippines to be declared as a tourism<br />
destination by a local government unit.<br />
Situated in a 24-hectare campus in Iloilo City, Central<br />
Philippine University (CPU) has a butterfly garden, several<br />
vegetable gardens, a Frutas park, a Millennium Tree park, a<br />
material recovery facility <strong>and</strong> other facilities that promote<br />
stewardship of the environment. CPU pioneered the offering<br />
of environmental science subjects <strong>and</strong> has a BS<br />
Environmental Management program under the College of<br />
Agriculture, Resources <strong>and</strong> Environmental Sciences. We also<br />
pioneered in launching a Program on Solid Waste<br />
Management.<br />
CPU’s no-smoking campus hosts the air quality monitoring<br />
station, the Region 6 Affiliated Renewable Energy Center, a<br />
Knowledge <strong>for</strong> Development Center that includes<br />
environment management among its focus areas, the Iloilo<br />
Rice Husk Center, <strong>and</strong> an Appropriate Technology Center. Its<br />
University-based TV channel has a regular <strong>Eco</strong>Forum. Five<br />
hectares of the watershed that serves the city <strong>and</strong> its environs<br />
have been adopted by CPU.<br />
CPU has a strong outreach <strong>and</strong> linkages both in government<br />
<strong>and</strong> non-government agencies. <strong>The</strong> University is supporting<br />
the Bulabog-Putian <strong>National</strong> Park at Dingle, Iloilo in<br />
conservation <strong>and</strong> other outreach activities. We pride to be<br />
the first to establish a garden with various species from all<br />
over the world of Moringa plant.<br />
<strong>The</strong> advocacies <strong>and</strong> accomplishments of its students, alumni<br />
<strong>and</strong> personnel are a testimony to CPU’s st<strong>and</strong> on the<br />
environment.<br />
