Department of Environment <strong>and</strong> Natural Resources (DENR)<br />
<strong>The</strong> <strong>National</strong> <strong>Search</strong> <strong>for</strong> <strong>Sustainable</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Eco</strong>-<strong>Friendly</strong> <strong>Schools</strong> is part of the response of<br />
the Department of Environment <strong>and</strong> Natural Resources (DENR), through the Environmental<br />
Management Bureau (EMB), to Republic Act No.9512 (An Act to Promote Environmental<br />
Awareness through Environmental Education), which requires all public <strong>and</strong> private schools to<br />
integrate environmental education in their curricula at all levels.<br />
Department of Education (DepEd)<br />
<strong>The</strong> Department of Education (DepEd) is one of the key implementers of the government’s<br />
initiatives in education <strong>for</strong> the environment. Through DepEd’s environmental<br />
education programs, the Filipino youth are empowered to act on environment<br />
issues. DepEd released Memo No. 480, Series of 2010 <strong>for</strong> the implementation of the <strong>Search</strong><br />
<strong>for</strong> <strong>Sustainable</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Eco</strong>-<strong>Friendly</strong> <strong>Schools</strong>.<br />
Commission on Higher Education (CHED)<br />
As implementing partner, the Commission on Higher Education (CHEd) released a Memor<strong>and</strong>um<br />
dated July 28, 2010 to encourage all private, state, <strong>and</strong> local colleges <strong>and</strong> universities<br />
to participate in environmental activities <strong>and</strong> initiate solutions to environmentrelated<br />
concerns.<br />
Smart Communications, Inc.<br />
Smart Communications, Inc. (SMART) is supporting the nationwide competition<br />
under Kabalikat sa Kalikasan. Its community service program geared towards the<br />
protection <strong>and</strong> preservation of the environment. Aside from<br />
supporting the nationwide search <strong>for</strong> the ‘greenest’ schools, SMART is also<br />
implementing a tree planting program <strong>and</strong> the use of renewable energy<br />
sources in powering cell sites in remote locations.
