The 2011 National Search for Sustainable and Eco-Friendly Schools

Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR)
The National Search for Sustainable and Eco-Friendly Schools is part of the response of
the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), through the Environmental
Management Bureau (EMB), to Republic Act No.9512 (An Act to Promote Environmental
Awareness through Environmental Education), which requires all public and private schools to
integrate environmental education in their curricula at all levels.
Department of Education (DepEd)
The Department of Education (DepEd) is one of the key implementers of the government’s
initiatives in education for the environment. Through DepEd’s environmental
education programs, the Filipino youth are empowered to act on environment
issues. DepEd released Memo No. 480, Series of 2010 for the implementation of the Search
for Sustainable and Eco-Friendly Schools.
Commission on Higher Education (CHED)
As implementing partner, the Commission on Higher Education (CHEd) released a Memorandum
dated July 28, 2010 to encourage all private, state, and local colleges and universities
to participate in environmental activities and initiate solutions to environmentrelated
concerns.
Smart Communications, Inc.
Smart Communications, Inc. (SMART) is supporting the nationwide competition
under Kabalikat sa Kalikasan. Its community service program geared towards the
protection and preservation of the environment. Aside from
supporting the nationwide search for the ‘greenest’ schools, SMART is also
implementing a tree planting program and the use of renewable energy
sources in powering cell sites in remote locations.
