State Almost to 2013 Marylanders Plant Trees Goal
Citizens reminded to register their trees
The New Year is almost here and the
State is close to reaching its goal of planting
and registering 100,000 trees by 2013
through the Marylanders Plant Trees program.
Governor Martin O’Malley reminds
citizens that there is still time to plant and
be counted.
“Reversing deforestation is complicated;
planting a tree is simple,” said Governor
O’Malley. “I’d like to thank everyone
who has helped us plant more than 91,000
trees across our State, and encourage all
Marylanders to plant a tree and help us
meet our goal to build a more sustainable
future for generations to come.”
Now is the time to plant any last
minute trees before winter sets in. Those
who have planted trees and have not yet
registered are encouraged to take a moment
and record them.

Trees protect water and air quality and
provide important wildlife habitat. One
large tree can eliminate 5,000 gallons of
stormwater runoff each year, and well
placed trees can help reduce energy costs
by 15 to 35 percent. Trees also help beautify
communities and parks, provide sound
barriers and shade, and help increase property
values.
Governor O’Malley launched the
Marylanders Plant Trees program in 2008
and has established the goal of planting and
registering 100,000 new trees under the
program by 2013. The Marylanders Plant
Trees program offers $25 coupons toward
the purchase of native trees. Those who
plant and register can observe the environmental
benefits of their tree through interactive
maps and charts and will be eligible
for prizes.
The Maryland Department of Natural
Resources also reminds citizens that the
holidays are a great time to give the Gift of
Trees. The Gift of Trees plants native trees
in honor or memory of family and friends,
to celebrate holidays or birthdays, or observe
other special occasions.

Canada Goose
Hunting
Season Reopens
Maryland’s migratory Atlantic Population
(AP) Canada goose hunting season
reopens on December 11th and continues
through January 30, 2013.
The daily bag limit is two geese per
day in the AP Canada goose hunting zone.
