Having a Fake I.D. Can Ruin Your Teen's Chances of
Getting Into College
Many parents believe using a fake ID
for liquor or cigarettes seems so minor it
can hardly be called a crime. However, it is
a misdemeanor offense. In the U.S., penalties
vary from state to state, but can include
jail time, fines, and community service.
Many parents and teens are unaware
that many pranks, silly things and misguided
actions can have permanent, unexpected
consequences. House parties, teen
DUI, drug use and other mistakes can lead
to jail, lawsuits and a life of regret for our
children! In addition, it is important to note
that schools and employers routinely check
Court documents that are easily accessible
on the internet.

According to Talbot Partnership for
Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse Prevention,
having a fake ID is just one offense. You
open yourself to other charges like possession
of alcohol and providing alcohol to
other minors. Going to jail could set back
your schooling and cost you your job. Be
aware that the law doesn't apply only to
fake IDs. It includes real IDs borrowed
from someone old enough who looks somewhat
like you, real IDs that have been altered,
or real IDs obtained with fake
documents, like using a fake birth certificate
to get a driver's license. The penalties
are just as severe for loaning your ID to another
person as for using a fake ID.
In Maryland, it doesn't matter if just
two little numbers are altered, or the whole
deal is fake. It's still a violation of Maryland
code. The maximum penalty is 6
months in jail and a fine of up to $500.
Simple possession without intent to sell it
or commit some kind of grievous crime almost
never carries jail. You will likely be
fined, get some kind of probation, alcohol
counseling, community service, or a combination
of those.
There’s some evidence that the government
is now more aggressively persecuting
fake ID crimes. A University of
Maryland student was recently indicted on
16 charges and faces decades of jail time
for producing fakes and selling them to fellow
students, according to the Baltimore
Sun.

youth to be aware of the consequences of
