Basti Nizamuddin, NEW DELHI
Winning, both on and off the field, comes from self-belief.
Sometimes this self-belief has to be nurtured and that is
how sport has changed the life of 14-year old Kulsum who
lives in the congested Nizamuddin region of New Delhi with her six
siblings and parents.
Driving home every child’s right to play, local NGO Butterflies joined
hands with like-minded bodies and the State Government to organise the
Children’s Commonwealth Games in February 2010. Hundreds of children,
from street children to private school children, were brought together by the
power of sport. It was here that Kulsum discovered her special talent. On top
of making many new friends, she raced to a Gold Medal and followed it up with
two Bronzes. Inspired by her success, she realised that now she could also leave
behind her addiction to drugs! When she won the under-16 Best Athlete Award,
life suddenly had a new meaning. She knows that her family and friends can now
see her potential too. Kulsum now wants to win more both in life and in sport!
“I am enjoying my
right to play. Now I
want to win more.”
