Anjani Patel
Balauda, CHHATTISGARH
At the age of three, polio snatched the strength
from Anjani’s left leg. The inviting waters of the
village pond, however, continued to beckon! At
nine, little Anjani took her first plunge and she has been
riding the waves generated by that leap of faith ever since.
In 2005, contesting in the combined category with seven
differently abled boys, 14-year old Anjani thrilled her village
by finishing 3 rd in a State Level Swimming Competition.
This was followed by two Gold Medals at the 2006
National Paralympic Swimming Meet, a Silver at the
2007 Long Distance Swimming Meet at Allahabad and
two Golds and a Silver at the 2008 National Paralympic
Swimming Meet. Anjani Patel – the only physically
challenged participant in the regulation category of the
2009 Indian National Women’s Swimming Competition,
also finished in the top five of all her events at the
International Disabled Swimming Championships held in
Bangalore in 2010.
“My first leap into the village pond
has carried me far. I hope that
others like me swim to success and
make the country victorious at the
international level.”
