There are many more accolades that I want to win!” Deepika Twenty-five year old Deepika was struck by polio when she was just 10 months old. She is confined to a wheelchair, but that has never deterred her from reaching for the skies! In school, she watched other children excel in sports but unlike many others, she vowed to be a winner herself! The results were amazing. It began in 2004 with her 2 nd place win in Wheelchair Racing at the 4 th National Rotary Youth Leadership Award (RYLA) for the Physically Challenged. This was followed by medals in Javelin, Discus and Shot Put at the Anna University Paralympics, the Tamil Nadu State Paralympics, the Junior National Championships in Athletics for the Disabled, Rotary Scope National Olympics and more National RYLAs and competitions, year after year! Not one to stop in her path, Deepika has now embraced the challenge of Wheelchair Fencing. The sport has brought her the most exhilarating moment of her life – her selection in the first Indian team to participate in the World Fencing Championships for the Disabled! Deepika underwent a strict diet, workout and training regime and secured 7 th place at the World Championships. As her new passion takes her places, she knows that the world title can one day be hers too!
