64 A ray of hope for orphans and children abandoned by their parents, a shelter in Bhubaneswar is home to more than 25 boys and girls. It is here that four brilliant young girls – Mamali Das, Tiki Patra, Riki Patra and Jharana Mallick – started their journey to sporting excellence. It is here that a wondrous football goal is coming true. Inspired by the success achieved by Shradhanjali Samantaray – Odisha’s woman football icon and former captain of the Indian women’s team – little Mamali was the first to kick-off to glory. Seeing Mamali play, Tiki, Riki, and Jharana were inspired to hone their skills too. <strong>The</strong> girls responded by practicing hard and going on to get selected in the under-13 and under-16 category in the state team. Mamali further progressed to qualify for the national women’s team in the under-13 and under-14 category and the under-19 state team. <strong>The</strong> heights to which Mamali, Tiki, Riki and Jharana will ascend in the service of their country still remains to be seen. Today what matters most is that, at a very young age, they are already towering inspirations not just for other children in their shelter home but also for the Salia Sahi slum as a whole!
