98 As the Chairman of Special Olympics Bharat – the national accredited programme of Special Olympics International – Air Marshal Denzil Keelor firmly believes that, through proper instruction and encouragement, people with intellectual disabilities can learn, enjoy, and benefit immensely from participation in individual and team sports. Special Olympics Bharat has grown manifold under the leadership of Air Marshal Denzil Keelor. The Government of India recognised it as the National Sports Federation for the Intellectually Disabled in 2006. Special Olympics Bharat DELHI “The beauty of helping others is that you are helping yourself.” Air Marshal Keelor As a strategic growth plan, Air Marshal Keelor has broad-based the Special Olympics Bharat programme to spread its reach to every district of India. So far, the programme has drawn over 36,000 coaches to work with over 655,234 athletes across 32 State Programmes. The goal is to extend the Special Olympics programme to reach over 10,00,000 people with intellectual disability by the end of 2012. The goal has to be met! People like 20-year old Ragini Rao, who have battled their ‘special’ status by expressing individuality through the power of sports, know what reaching the goal can help achieve. A winner of several local, state and national tournaments in Badminton and Table Tennis, Ragini has represented India at Youth Summits in China and Thailand. In 2008, the year she completed her schooling, she also attended a forum in the USA to advocate for the rights of Special Children. Ragini has since then completed her Nursery- Primary Teacher’s Training programme to become a teacher. Ragini Rao is also a Board member of the Delhi Chapter of Special Olympics Bharat. Like Air Marshal Keelor, she knows that a lot more needs to be done, and Special Olympics Bharat will leave no stone unturned in doing it!
