84 Ujjawala Gajanan Dongre Chekgojoli, MAHARASHTRA Twenty-four year old Ujjawala Gajanan Dongre’s remarkable journey from an ordinary village girl to Sarpanch (Village Head) has a strong sporting influence. About two years ago, Ujjawala volunteered to be a Community Sports Coach (CSC) under the International Inspiration programme. Impressing everyone with her spirited conduct of sports-oriented sessions, Ujjawala brought many children and young people together on a regular basis through sports. The village began witnessing the re-birth of a sporting culture marked by the organisation of regular tournaments for volleyball, football and other games. It was her success as a coach that inspired her to run for the post of Sarpanch in the 2009 Panchayat (Village Administrative Body) elections. It was a bold move for an unmarried rural girl, but she emerged victorious. The majority of the village supported her and Ujjawala became Sarpanch of Chekgojoli Village. Sport continues to be an important area of focus for her along with core issues like village health, sanitation and education. Under her leadership, Chekgojoli has been awarded the Mahatma Gandhi Tanta Mukti Prize, which carries a cash prize of Rs. 2,00,000/-, for successfully making the village a conflict free place and maintaining the peace. With the support of the community, she was also successful in stopping the sale of liquor in the village. “From a Community Sports Coach to being a Sarpanch, I have come a long way.
