The Downshift - Page MEETING OF MIDWESTERN COUNCIL BOARDS – July 9th, 2009 Regular Executive and Competition Board meeting, Sam’s Ristorante, Rockford IL. EXECUTIVE BOARD President Cassaro called to meeting to order at 8:02 pm. It was ascertained that a quorum was present. All officers were present except Comp. Director Wheeler, and clubs were represented as follows: CSCC-Weis, Wells; FT- S.Green, Hoover; GLSCC-Schley, Kannard; LSCC-Kevin, Harlan; MSCC-Anderson, Jackson; NSSCC-Serra; SCSCC-Cromas, Lewis; SCCR-P.Green, Rehberg. M(Schley) & 2(Kannard) to approve the minutes of the June meeting as printed. Pass. TREASURER’S REPORT: All accounting is up to date. M(Wells), & 2(Schley) to accept report as printed. Pass. OLD BUSINESS - Driver School Update: Harlan reported 18 entries for AX and about 15 for W-W. More track timers would be appreciated. - Milwaukee Mile Update: MM management has gone bankrupt. Cassaro has been working with State Fair Park management, who is taking over track rental and prefers working with smaller sanctioning bodies such as MC and SCCA instead of larger groups such as NASCAR or IRL (although private promoters may sponsor the latter events). The event will be over Labor Day weekend with HPDE on Sat., W-W on Sun. and AX on Mon. Event details are being managed and Ferris wheel competition is hot among the clubs,. - 2009 Awards Banquet: Serra is in negotiation with a few venues. It is the 3rd Saturday in January. NEW BUSINESS - 2009 Directory: Thanks go to Schneider who put it together and distributed it. It looks very good. Extras will be available at the next meeting. COMPETITION BOARD OLD BUSINESS - Autocross Committee: Todd Simpson is the new chairman. Meetings will be at events so there are more attendees with more input. - Race Staff: No committee. Cassaro took the yellow S&R truck to get fixed; it worked fine at Autobahn. - Steward Committee: Next meeting is July 17 at Backyard Bar & Grill. Meetings are open to all MC members with Bridge Stewards and Club Stewards strongly encouraged to attend. Jackson will mail out an agenda this week. - July 18 School: Details covered already. Wheeler will work on updating school entry forms during the off season. He would like input. - Rule-a-Thon: Jackson will put together some info for KLAXON. Any proposals to be made must be in written form with 10 copies submitted at the beginning of the meeting. It will be on Aug. 15 NEW BUSINESS - Open MC Positions for 2010: Comp Director – Pat Kevin is in the running. Open are Staff Director, Staff Committee Chair, KLAXON Editor, all of whom are desperately needed. Nominations for Pres., V-P, Treas., Sec. will happen in Nov. Harlan is willing to run as Treas. M(P.Green) & 2(Kannard) to adjourn at 8:34 (a new record). Pass. Minutes taken and transcribed by S. Boldt. British Car Festival at Oakton Community College - Sept. 13th The British Car Union announces the 23rd Annual Chicagoland British Car Festival. The Festival will return to Oakton Community College in DesPlaines, Illinois on Sunday, September 13th from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM. All British car owners from Austin to Zephyr are invited to the “come as you are” event which will feature national and local vendors, People’s Choice judging, and door prizes for registrants. The fee for car registration is $20.00, and spectators are free. British cars and motorcycles will be featured, and the first 500 registrants will receive a special gift. The Downshift - Page Chicagoland’s Facebook Page Grows Fan Base CSCC’s Facebook Page features a Video about Road Racing. Through the efforts of CSCC President, Bill Boesen, Chicagoland Sports Car Club has established a Facebook presence. The page enables social networking for friends and fans of the Club. In it’s unannounced state, the site has already attracted a number of members and fans that want to stay in touch. If you use the Web, open a browser session at www.Facebook.com. In the Search box at the top of the Facebook page, insert “Chicagoland Sports Car Club”. If you are new to Facebook, you may want to establish a page (it’s free) of your own. Social networking sites can be an interesting experience, but you have to set boundaries on your privacy and access. The tools in Facebook allow you to control your exposure level. Bill has also included the 9 minute version of the CSCC Video that was used at the 2009 Kart Expo in February. The video profiles the various classes of cars, featuring Club members and other MC competitors in action. You can check out the site and see what’s up. If you need some help, Contact Bill Boesen, Mike Schindlbeck, or Larry Best for some navigation tips that will quickly get you up to speed. Jim Hartman Trophy History - Project Launched If you have been to a Chicagoland Banquet in the last 43 years, you have likely been part of the ceremony for awarding the “Jim Hartman Memorial Trophy”, the perpetual award in CSCC for “Driver of the Year”. The recipient has always shared his or her favorite beverage in the 3 handled cup with other Club Members in celebration. The Hartman Trophy was first awarded in 1966, two years after the untimely passing of it’s namesake, Jim Hartman. The cup is inscribed on 3 sides with the names of the recipients through 1984. Curiously, the cup is also inscribed with the names of 9 members of a mysterious Rowing Team, from which the cup was liberated to take on the recognition duties for CSCC Road Racing drivers. The custom wooden base was created in 1985, providing 4 sides to expand the names of the recipients for some time to come. Each year the recipient form the previous year is presented a replacement plaque as the trophy travels form member to member. Some CSCC members have earned the honor more than once. Realizing that a Club with 50 years of rich history might not recall all the details of each person to be awarded the Jim Hartman Trophy, Mike Schindlbeck has volunteered to further document the full history of the Cup, it’s origin, and the members that have won it. Mike needs your assistance in starting this work, with an emphasis on identifying what kind of car the winner was driving, current contact information, and what they are doing today.
