Northern Lakes College 2012–2013 Calendar Services for Students Accommodations for Students Northern Lakes College Student Residences are available at the Grouard and Slave Lake Campuses. Student Residence offers students a place to live PLUS access to a variety of recreation facilities and events. If you enjoy getting involved and being active, we offer a wide range of both indoor and outdoor activities - swimming, kayaking, canoeing, snow shoeing, cross country skiing, and so much more. Residence is a place where students can interact with other students, meet new people and develop a range of personal skills. It is a supportive environment and your home away from home! Slave Lake Campus Mouallem Student Residence Townhouse style, co-ed living • Four bedroom units with single beds & two bathrooms; Shared kitchen & living room • Barrier-free two bedroom units available for those requiring accommodations for physical disabilities (shared bathroom, kitchen & living room) • Units are fully furnished - students bring bedding, towels & cooking utensils • Coin-operated laundry facility • Single room rent is $450/student per month • Security Deposit is $450 • Utilities are included For information for the Mouallem Student Residence, contact the Facilities Housing Coordinator at the Slave Lake Campus 780-849-8638 or toll free 1-866-652-3456. Grouard Campus The Grouard campus has a variety of housing options for the prospective student. There are both townhouse and single detached homes for students with families and a 48 bed dormitory, Moosehorn Lodge, for single students. The pricing for these accommodations varies; please feel free to contact us for further details. Student Family Housing For students with families • Furnished townhouse units - 3 and 4 bedroom units • Unfurnished houses – 3 and 4 bedroom units • Security deposit is equal to one month’s rent • Utilities are included in the rent The Moosehorn Lodge Dormitory style, single, co-ed living Moosehorn Lodge is a 48 bed dormitory in Grouard; the building has undergone extensive renovations in the past several years. Most of the 48 rooms have been painted and are now receiving new flooring and lighting, new bed frames in most of the rooms and every room has had a new mattress within the last year (2011). The lounge area has had a complete face lift with new furnishings, paint, flooring and a new projector TV and a surround sound system. The addition of free wireless internet throughout the housing portion of the building has also been a major improvement. Finally, the entire first floor has had new window treatments. Tenants of the facility also have an onsite coin operated laundry mat that is also available to the local community. 4 of the 48 rooms are specifically reserved for short term guests and are outfitted similar to a hotel room with microwaves, coffee makers, table and chairs, bedding (additional cost), and alarm clocks. 12 For more information call toll-free 1-866-652-3456
Northern Lakes College 2012–2013 Calendar Some of the amenities in the standard rooms include: • Mini fridge • Bed • Desk • Nightstand • Chair Features available to all dormitory tenants include: • Free wireless internet • Common kitchens on each floor • Common bathrooms on each floor All tenants are welcome to take advantage of the weekly shopping trips provided to High Prairie and to Slave Lake; every Sunday there is free swimming for students and their immediate families. There is also evening access to the library, computer lab and the gymnasium (Monday- Thursday) at the Grouard campus. Finally, the on-site cafeteria, which is now under new management, operates weekdays for breakfast and lunch at very affordable rates. For information on the Grouard Residence, contact the Facilities Housing Coordinator at the Grouard campus 780-751-3280 or toll free 1-866-652-3456 Cafeteria Services Cafeterias are located at the Grouard and Slave Lake campuses, providing varied and nutritious meals for students. Students, staff and guests are treated to a different menu each day. The cafeterias are open for breakfast & lunch during regular scheduled school days. Hours of operation and costs are posted at the cafeteria. Childcare Childcare may be available in communities as independent operations, administered separately from the College. Available care for children will vary and students are encouraged to check locally for daycare or dayhome services. Counselling Services Career & educational counselling Helping students develop educational plans that are in alignment with their needs and the college programs. Personal and academic problem solving support Individual assessments and provision of workshops in personal development and student skills. Financial Support Students must see a Counsellor to be approved for Alberta Works financial support. Counsellors also assist students applying for other funding including student loans, grants, bursaries, and scholarships (please refer to Student Funding & Financial Assistance). Learner Assistance Services Learner Assistance Services provides access to information and individual assessment to enhance student skills. It is available to all students and specialized supports are available for students with disabilities . Learner Assistance Services, in coordination with counsellors and faculty, can provide help on a variety of topics such as: Time Management , Organization, Budgeting, Note taking, Test taking, Attention /concentration, Memory and Study skills, and much more.
