Northern Lakes College 2012–2013 Calendar Educational Assistant Certificate Program • Part-time & Full-time Locations Daytime: Most NLC Campuses Evening: All NLC Community Learning Centres (CLCs) Program Dates Daytime Term 1: September 4, 2012 to December 14, 2012 Term 2: January 7, 2013 to April 26, 2013 Term 3: May 6, 2013 to May 31, 2013 Evening Multiple Intake Dates (Students can start whenever a new course begins): Term 1: September 4, 2012 to December 14, 2012 Term 2: January 7, 2013 to April 26, 2013 Term 3: May 6, 2013 to June 21, 2013 By taking courses each term, students may receive a certificate in about three years. Classes run two evenings a week which allows people already working in the field to access the program. Program Description This program prepares its graduates to assume diverse responsibilities within educational settings. These responsibilities may include assisting children with special needs by adapting or modifying educational materials and programs. In addition, educational assistants participate in observing and reporting a child’s progress to teachers and other related professionals. Educational assistants also reinforce learning in one-on-one or small group situations; act as facilitators for the inclusion of children with special needs; and prepare instructional materials for teachers. Employment Opportunities Graduates of the Educational Assistant program will be prepared to assist children with special needs in the school system from Kindergarten to Grade 9, and with children in early intervention programs or daycares. Entrance Requirements Academic Requirements: • Credit in English 30-1 or 60% in English 30-2 and • Credit in Math 10 C or 10-3, Equivalent Math and English courses will also be considered. Other Requirements: • Fluency in English Note: Applicants without the academic requirements will be considered if they: - satisfactorily complete a Skills Appraisal Assessment; or - have completed a General Educational Development diploma; or - have met the provisional student requirements. Applicants without the prerequisites may enroll in individual courses as unclassified if given department approval. Provisional Student Requirements: Successful completion of 3 courses from the program (during the evenings). If the student does not have the math requirement then at least one of the courses must be TAST0106. The other two courses can be any other two Educational Assistant courses except for Introduction to Computers. Pre-Program Considerations: Practicum agencies may require an up-to-date Criminal Record Check (Vulnerable Sector) and an Alberta Child and Youth Information Systems Check of students placed in their organizations. The inability to present clear checks means a student may not be able to complete the requirements of the program. Contact the Program Coordinator for further information. Students are required to sign a Criminal Record Check Declaration of Understanding form upon entry to the program. Educational Assistant Further Education & Training Options Graduates can transfer into the Educational Assistant diploma programs at other colleges.
