Northern Lakes College 2012–2013 Calendar Early Childhood Education CERTIFICATE OF COMPLETION – Full-time (Pending Approval) & Part-time Location Full-Time (Day): Most NLC Campuses Part-time (Evening.): Any NLC Community Learning Centre Program Dates: Full-time (Day): Term 1: September 4, 2012 to December 14, 2012 Term 2: January 7, 2013 to April 26, 2013 Term 3: April 29, 2013 to May 31, 2013 Part-Time (Evening): Multiple Intake Dates. (Students can start whenever a new course begins.) Term 1: September 4, 2012 to December 14, 2012 Term 2: January 7, 2013 to April 26, 2013 Term 3: May 6, 2013 to June 21, 2013 Program Description This program prepares its graduates to work effectively with children ages birth to twelve years. It focuses on growth at each stage of development, with particular emphasis on ages birth to five years, the foundational developmental years. Students enrolled in the certificate program will develop knowledge and skills to work effectively with special needs children. Entrance Requirements Academic Requirements: • Credit in English 30-1 or 60% in English 30-2. Equivalent English courses will also be considered. Note: Applicants without the academic requirements may be accepted if they: - successfully complete a Skills Appraisal Assessment, or - have completed General Educational Development (GED) Diploma, or - have met the provisional student requirements of successful completion of 3 consecutive courses from the program (with department approval) Other Requirements: Fluency in English Pre-Program Considerations: Practicum agencies may require an up-to-date Criminal Record Check (Vulnerable Sector) and an Alberta Child and Youth Information Systems Check of students placed in their organizations. The inability to present clear checks means a student may not be able to complete the requirements of the program. Contact the Program Coordinator for further information. Students are required to sign a Criminal Record Check Declaration of Understanding form upon entry to the program. Early childhood education Students enrolled in the part-time offering of the program may, by taking courses each term, receive a certificate within two years. Classes in the part-time offering run two evenings a week which allows people already working in the field to access the program. Employment Opportunities Graduates of the Early Childhood Education Certificate program will qualify for Child Development Worker certification (formerly Level II certification). Further Education & Training Options Students would have the option of transferring to an institution offering the Early Childhood Diploma program. Students would also have 18 credits towards the Educational Assistant program at NLC.
