Term 2: January 9, 2013 to February 22, 2013<br />
Part-time (specific courses only offered each intake):<br />
Term 1: September 4, 2012 to December 14, 2012<br />
Term 2: January 7, 2013 to April 26, 2013<br />
Program Description<br />
This program is intended to prepare students to work in<br />
the demanding occupation of a medical receptionist in a<br />
community health center or other medical office. Students<br />
will gain knowledge and skills of a medical receptionist<br />
including the use of basic communication techniques to<br />
greet patients and other visitors, make appointments and<br />
verify insurance information using a computer, prepare and<br />
maintain patient charts, answer phones and take accurate<br />
messages. Students will also learn medical terminology,<br />
study basic anatomy and physiology and common disease<br />
processes, and will gain an awareness of the implications<br />
of Aboriginal healthcare issues and provincial and federal<br />
guidelines. The emphasis is on performing all duties in<br />
a safe, effective, and efficient manner. Upon successful<br />
completion of the program, students will receive a<br />
certificate of completion.<br />
Employment Opportunities<br />
Graduates of this program will continue to retain and gain<br />
successful employment with a variety of healthcare centres/<br />
facilities.<br />
Further Education & Training Options<br />
Graduates of the certificate program will receive advanced<br />
credit in the Office Administration and/or Health Care<br />
Aide program.<br />
Entrance Requirements:<br />
Academic Requirements<br />
• Credit in English 30-1 or 60% in English 30-2.<br />
Equivalent English courses will also be considered.<br />
Applicants without the academic requirements will be<br />
considered if they:<br />
- satisfactorily complete a Skills Appraisal Assessment or<br />
- have completed a General Educational Development<br />
(GED) Diploma or<br />
- have met the provisional student requirements<br />
(successful completion of the first two courses)<br />
Other Requirements<br />
• Fluency in English<br />
Note: Practicum agencies may require students to have an upto-date<br />
criminal record check to work in their organization.<br />
The inability to present clear checks means a student may not<br />
be able to complete the requirements of the program. Contact<br />
the program coordinator for further information.<br />

This program is delivered live and online with an instructor<br />
