7 Higher Certificate in Education, Training and Development Is this for you? Practitioners who acquire this qualification will attain recognition in ETD practice at Level 5 across all the roles in a generalist capacity, with particular application possible in at least one role. Qualifying learners will make a significant contribution to structured and targeted skills development at the level of learning programmes in enterprises and other learning environments. Ideal candidates for the National Higher Certificate would be: •• Needs analysts •• Learning designers and developers •• Learning facilitators •• Assessors •• Evaluators •• Learner and learning supporters How will you be trained? The Higher Certificate in ETD is based on the registered ETD (Occupation Directed) standards as provided by SAQA. This implies that the course is very practical and covers foundational, practical and reflective components. The 18-month programme has four compulsory study schools. During these schools, study groups are formed to ensure that you always have the support of colleagues and are able to integrate knowledge through group discussions. After the study schools, there is an additional assessment support session on a Saturday per module. The presenters of contact sessions are subject-matter experts with industry experience. Ongoing learner support is provided telephonically and via the Internet and electronic mail. The full qualification consists of nine modules. Learners must complete all nine modules, including the reflective integrated assessment. A National Certificate in ETD will be awarded to learners who attain the required results. Another option is to enrol per module of your choice. For this option, learners are assessed and are awarded a modulespecific certificate upon successful completion of the course. Module credits are retained and can be used towards further studies within the following three years. NQF credits The full certificate is equal to 120 credits on Level 5 of the NQF. Language of tuition Course material is available in English. Contact sessions will be facilitated in English.
Programme overview The course is divided into nine modules. The modules are: Module 1: Fundamentals of the NQF This is an introductory module for the learner to explore the foundational concepts in the ETD field. This includes exposure to the NQF, an outcomes-based approach to learning and an exploration of ETD in the South African context. Module 2: Promote Skills Development This module focuses on how to promote a learning culture in an organisation, using information about the skills development needs in an organisation or department. Module 3: Design Outcomes-Based Learning Programmes An in-depth look at the approaches, processes and principles for designing outcomes-based learning programmes that meet the national, sector, workplace and individual learning and skills development needs. Module 4: Design and Develop Outcomes- Based Assessments The focus is on how to design and develop outcomes-based assessments that meet the criteria of nationally registered unit standards. The process, procedure and principles that govern design for outcomes based assessments are explored and practised. Module 5: Develop Outcomes-Based Learning Programmes How to develop learning programmes that are aligned to the principles and processes of an outcomes-based methodology. The challenge is to develop learning materials and activities that are really “fit for purpose”, relevant and meaningful to learners. Module 6: Facilitate Adult Learning An in-depth look at how to facilitate learning and the transfer of learning successfully, making use of effective delivery methods and media to achieve learning outcomes. Module 7: Guide and Support Learners This is about giving learners the appropriate levels of guidance, advice and support when it comes to their special needs and barriers to learning, about managing their learning and assessment experiences, and about their choices in learning assessment and recognition of prior learning. Module 8: Conduct Outcomes-Based Assessment This module focuses on following a proven process to conduct an outcomesbased assessment, together with an in-depth look at the principles and criteria for conducting an effective assessment. 8
