Heirs of the Prophets
On Sunday January 10 th at 4 pm KKBE will again
be hosting a Gathering of African-Americans and
Jews in celebration of the life and works of Dr.
Martin Luther King, Jr.
Our speaker this year is the Honorable James E.
Clyburn, congressional leader and veteran of the
Civil Rights struggle. Participants will include both
several African-American clergy and Charleston
rabbis as well as musicians from both communities.
This gathering, a week before the Martin Luther King Day weekend, is a
significant one in our community and well worth attending. This occasion
also prompts us to remind ourselves of our abiding Jewish concerns for
social justice and the welfare of all.
More than two and a half thousand years ago Amos urged the people to:
“Hate evil and love good and establish justice in the gates of the land” and
Micah similarly emphasized the importance of “doing justice, loving mercy
and walking humbly with your God.” And as Jeremiah phrased it: “If one
practices justice and righteousness, if one champions the cause of the poor,
then it is well with one - this indeed is to know me, says God.”
While there are some who would argue that religion essentially deals with
ritual and custom, the voices of our ancient Hebrew prophets remind us that
we are most religious when we correct societal evils and help our fellow
human beings. From ancient days until our time, Jews have lived and
sometimes died for such ideals.
The battles we fight today may be different from those of the past, but it is
appropriate that Jewish voices are prominent among those who seek
universal health care and better education for all, and are vocal on issues
such as global warming.
As Jewish individuals, there are many ways of expressing our Jewish
identity. But none of these ways are more valuable and more truly religious
than the path of activism on behalf of our fellow human beings and all who
live on this good earth.
Our Mission Statement
Rabbi Anthony D. Holz
The mission of Kahal Kadosh Beth Elohim shall be to serve the
religious needs of families and individuals through programs of
lifelong Jewish education (Torah), inclusive communal worship
and ritual (Avodah), and the ongoing quest for greater justice,
peace and acts of loving-kindness (Gemilut Chasadim).

Dear Congregants,
So how many people get to celebrate tw o New Years? As Jews, we do. Our Jew ish New Year,
Rosh Hashanah, seems like it was y esterday and now we have just celebrated the Gregorian
Calendar New Year too (January through December). I guess that means we get to make tw o
sets of resolutions.
Here are the “Top 5” of my newest set of personal resolutions:
1. Lose some weight. This has been on my New Year’s resolution list for at least 10 y ears.
2. Go on vacation. But if y ou liv e in Charleston, isn’t that a perpetual v acation?
3. Win the lottery! Do y ou hav e to buy a ticket to win?
4. Do some overdue household chores. This probably needs to wait until Rosh Hashanah.
5. Take Spanish classes. No tengo tiempo ahora. (I don’t hav e time now.)
Here are my “Top 5” for KKBE:
1. Increase worship & programming. This is the heart of w hat a synagogue provides for its members.
2. Increase endowment. This is what enables a synagogue to provide increased w orship and programming.
3. Increase clergy. Be in a position to add an Assistant Rabbi.
4. Increase volunteers. We have an amazing cadre of v olunteers but alw ays need more. Looking for fresh blood!
5. Improve our facilities. We are the guardians of an historic treasure. It alw ays needs maintenance and enhancement. See #2
President’s Message
Legacy Giving by Paul Lynch
(Originally published in the College of Charleston’s Fall Yaschik/Arnold Jewish Studies Program’s 2009 Fall Program.
Printed with Mr. Lynch’s permission.)
“Individuals are often unsure of what is meant by the term planned giving. A gift is planned in that the indiv idual purposefully makes a gift as
a part of his or her financial, tax and/or estate plan. A planned gift positively impacts the donor and his or her family as well as organizations
such as … KKBE. Planned gifts leave a legacy that benefits not only the donor and the donor’s family, but also generations to come.
A planned gift provides an individual and his or her family with a variety of benefits including income and/or estate tax benefits, providing
income to the donor and/or his or her family, and the passing of assets to family members at reduced costs. Planning can be made with
stock, securities, and/or cash or even real property. Gifts can take several forms. Four ex amples follow:
1) Bequests: This is the most common and simplest form of a planned gift. A bequest is a gift … that is made through a donor’s Last Will
and Testament.
2) Charitable Remainder Trust: There are tw o basic types of Charitable Remainder Trusts: A Unitrust and an Annuity Trust. In both, the
donor giv es stock, cash or other assets to a trust. Those assets are invested and income is paid to the donor for a fix ed amount of time or
until the donor dies. When the donor dies, the charity keeps all remaining assets. In a Unitrust, the donor receives one or more yearly
payments equalizing a fixed percentage of the value of the assets. In an Annuity Trust, the donor receives a yearly, fixed payment equal to
at least fiv e percent (5%) of the value of the assets at the time the deferred giving agreement was signed.
3) Gift Annuity: Donors contribute cash, securities, or other assets to a charity. In exchange, they receive annual payments for a fix ed
amount of time. Annual payments need not start when the gift is made; they begin at a time specified by the donor.
4) Charitable Lead Trust: A charity receives the income from the donor’s assets for a specified amount of time after which the assets are
transferred back to the donor or to the donor’s heirs.”
Please speak to your tax or financial adv isor regarding planning techniques that can help you, y our family and perhaps, KKBE. If you have
questions about how you can make a planned gift, please contact the Temple Office at 723-1090.
We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give. –Winston Churchill
From Our Search Committee
Meet Rabbi Stephanie Alexander
Rabbi Stephanie Alexander received her undergraduate degree, a B.S. in Psychology with honors in
Jew ish Studies, from Tulane Univ ersity in New Orleans. She earned her ordination, as w ell as a Masters
degree in both Hebrew Literature and Religious Education, from Hebrew Union College-Jew ish Institute of
Religion in 2003. Her rabbinic thesis w as entitled: “Standing at the Altar: Re-imagining the Significance of
Bar/Bat Mitzv ah.” After her ordination, Rabbi Alex ander serv ed as an Assistant Rabbi at Temple Isaiah in
Lex ington, MA (799 families). She then w orked for a y ear as the Regional Director of Youth and Informal
Education for the URJ's Midwest Council before taking a solo pulpit at Temple Beth El in Dubuque, Iow a,
w here she has serv ed for the last three y ears. During that same time, she served as an Adjunct Professor
at Coe College in Cedar Rapids, Iow a and was the Midrasha Coordinator for high school age children at
Temple Judah in Cedar Rapids, Iow a. Throughout her training and practice as a rabbi and educator, Rabbi Alexander sought out
institutions that v alue creativ ity in programming—from an ex perimental Shabbat family school to multigenerational social justice
organizing to a supplemental congregational high school program ov er 120 teenagers strong. Rabbi Alex ander currently liv es in her
hometow n of St. Louis with her husband, Rabbi Aaron Sherman, and 20-month-old son, Eli.
In her personal statement to the Search Committee, Rabbi Alexander wrote:
” The rabbinate is an all-access pass—an awesome privilege and sacred responsibility. I have tried to be worthy of that honor by
maintaining high standards in all that I do. I take tremendous pride, and find great fulfillment, in the preparation that precedes my
work. In worship, I am as mindful of tone and transitions as I am of the sermon and music, knowing all can provide portals to
spirituality. In teaching, I find creativity, humor and relevance to be as important as the particular Jewish content. I understand that
what I have to share with a community includes my Jewish knowledge, but transcends it, as well…..As a rabbi, I endeavor to be an
accessible role model, sharing my own Jewish practices and choices as a means of encouraging others to embrace their own.
I strive to work in partnership with other staff and lay leadership to ensure that congregational programming is both meaningful and
purposeful. A congregant recently shared a wonderful metaphor. He said Reform Judaism is like a cafeteria: the offerings are
endless and each might be as fulfilling as the next. If you come through the line with an empty tray, you have no one to blame but
yourself. A congregation’s programming—educational, cultural, religious and social—should serve to create that cafeteria. Utilizing
creative formats, seeking institutional partnerships, and mining the talents and skills of its own membership, a congregation’s offerings
should empower its members to make the personal, educated choices that are the hallmark of Reform Judaism.”
Through the long, inv olv ed process of searching for KKBE’s nex t Rabbi, the Search Committee learned a tremendous amount about
many v ery skilled, very capable, amazing rabbis. But our mission took us further; our aim w as to find the best Rabbi for KKBE. In
Rabbi Alex ander w e found just that. We found a rabbi w hose rabbinate is a calling. We found a spiritual leader w hose ability to
connect w ith others is natural and w hose warmth shines from within. We found a teacher for w hom teaching is both an avocation and
a sacred duty . We found a creativ e role model who will help us grow and thriv e as she ex cels in reaching div erse constituencies.
The Committee spoke w ith many references: rabbis, HUC professors, congregants, temple presidents, and y outh group
representativ es. We learned this: “Rabbi Alex ander is one of the most beautiful human beings/souls I hav e ever known….She is
authentic, a talented educator across the spectrum of ages….. She is warm, passionate, open, caring…. Her spirit is multi faceted
and her spirituality shines through her sermons…she has great inner strength….she respects history and has a vision for the
future….” (w e could go on and on, but space will not allow).
Upon meeting Rabbi Alex ander, Rabbi Holz reflected that she is “a warm, kind, exceptional person w ith a lot to offer, and is an
excellent choice for KKBE.”
When w e advised Rabbi Lennard Thal (Interim Director of Placement for CCAR) of the unanimous recommendation by the Search
Committee and Board of Trustees, he w rote: “I regard this particular Placement as a ‘match made in Heaven’ – a wonderful
rabbi with a wonderful congregation – in a beautiful city to boot!”
Executive Director’s Message
Creating the KKBE of Our Dreams
It’s a New Year on the Gregorian calendar. We’v e sipped sparkling bev erages, dipped some chips,
w atched some bowl games and some of us (like Dav id Jaffee) hav e taken time to list our goals on paper for
the coming year.
As I pondered the New Year, I realize I’v e w orked for y ou for a full 12 months! I hav e learned so much and
I know there is a great deal more I need to discover.
To me it is w onderful that this time of y ear coincides with study ing the Book of Ex odus (Shmot) that
chronicles the creation of the nation of Israel from the descendants of Jacob. In a w ay, this is our time to
ponder the KKBE w e w ant to create in 2010. I’v e thought about w hat I can do to multiply our numbers and
make our Temple stronger. Here are my resolutions.
In 2010, I’ll work to:
• Show lov ing kindness to all our members, friends and staff. We can show lov ing kindness when we welcome one another and
v isitors during Onegs, when we answ er requests for volunteer service, when we support one another during good times and
w hen times are sad or frightening. We can show it in the w ays w e interact as w e w orship and work at KKBE.
• Continue my lifelong learning. I will continue to study Judaism to build on the strong foundation Amy provided in our 2009
Conv ersion Class. (If y ou are interested in conv ersion, I giv e the class 5 stars!) It’s my goal to honor KKBE’s traditions and
rituals in ev ery way possible. I hope y ou’ll help me.
• Improv e my speling. (Okay, I threw in that ty po for fun.) I DO know our Temple Office makes spelling mistakes in
announcement sheets and other publications. We are always soooo sorry! We’v e driv en some of y ou mad and I promise it
w as never intentional! In 2010, w e’ll striv e for zero spelling errors. Let us know w hen y ou catch something we can fix —it is
the only w ay we improv e our work.
• To find meaningful ways to honor KKBE’s remarkable v olunteers, from our Trustees to the amazing w omen who conv ince
v isitors that they cannot leav e Charleston w ithout a new $60 menorah from Chosen Treasures.
• To lov ingly honor Rabbi Holz’s notable service to our congregation and community as he transitions to Rabbi Emeritus and to
w elcome Rabbi Alex ander and support the v isions she creates for our congregation.
• To communicate w ith you in ev ery way possible so y ou are always aware of the times you can w orship at KKBE, learn at
KKBE, and improv e our world in concert w ith other KKBE volunteers.
Those are the major resolutions I’ll be working on in this New Year. Wow. They ’ll be a challenge! I hope I can count on your
assistance to help me succeed. It w ill take a village, of that I am certain. It’s an honor to start 2010 in y our company. I hope y our
2010 is happy and healthy for us all!
Shalom,
Religious School Updates
Amy I. W. Horner, M.A., Temple Educator
One of the w onderful parts of being an educator is w atching your students grow. The faculty and I
feel fortunate that as part of the KKBE family, w e see “our” students grow into thoughtful y oung Jew ish
adults. Some of our best students become madrichim (guides or y oung leaders) by serv ing as teaching
assistants in the Religious School. Watching our students become teachers is a special joy!
High school senior Jacob Kupferman is one of our madrichim, both in Hebrew and Religious School
classes, and I am delighted to share this space with him this month. Jacob recently wrote an article for the
Porter-Gaud newspaper w hich I am reprinting here w ith his permission. As y ou will no doubt guess from his
thoughts on teaching, Jacob is quite an asset to our school. I thank him for sharing his time and talents w ith
our school each w eek, and for sharing his perspectiv e with us so beautifully.
-A View from the Other Side
Jacob Kupferman
Being a student for almost all my life, I nev er took much time to think about w hat it must be like to be a teacher. Therefore,
w hen I started as an assistant teacher at Sunday School over tw o y ears ago, the rev ersed role w as quite a surprise. For once, I w as
the one w ho was in charge, but I w as also the one who had more responsibility . As I soon realized, teaching six th grade students
w as not as easy as I had first thought. I’v e learned many things about teachers that I nev er would have realized by just being a
student.
First off, I ex perienced first-hand what it is like to have students try to test your patience. Every day I w ould come into class
and hav e certain students always try to push the limits. Some just w ouldn’t stop talking. Others threw things across the room. I ev en
had one kid w ho thought it’d be fun to craw l around on the floor like a snake until I had to literally pick him up and put him back in his
chair. Sometimes I felt more like I w as babysitting than actually teaching. After all, these kids w ere in six th grade. I’v e often
w ondered if that w ere how I acted w hen I w as that age. If so, I w ish I could go back and apologize to my teachers.
I also quickly realized that keeping class exciting w as difficult. Ev en though I w as not the one writing up the lesson plans for
the students, I could tell that they sometimes found class boring. But how could I make it more exciting? Most of the kids there
probably did not voluntarily want to go to Sunday School. I tried to incorporate some fun, engaging things into the class, like mov ies
or games, but I couldn’t do those things for ev ery class. How ever, I finally realized that if I put on a more positiv e and optimistic
persona, the students w ere more likely to pay attention. If I seemed genuinely interested in w hat I taught, they w ould show more
interest as w ell.
The last thing I learned, and the most influential, is what it feels like to watch a class grow up. I’m not normally an overly
sentimental person, but w hen I came back to teach for the second year, I had a strange feeling w hen I saw my prev ious class more
grow n up than they w ere before. I found myself saying that those were “my kids,” w ho had now moved on to higher grades. I felt
proud to say I helped teach them, and ev en prouder when they remembered me as their prev ious teacher. I felt as if I had actually
done something worthw hile for them. I finally realized w hy so many people are teachers.
Planning a special event? Join us for our first ev er Simcha Fair!
On Sunday , January 31, from 12:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m., KKBE w ill host our first Simcha Fair. If y ou have a bar or bat mitzvah,
w edding, graduation or any special celebration in the future, y ou w on’t want to miss this! Vendors from all ov er the Charleston area
w ill be represented, including caterers, v enue representativ es, photographers, ev ent coordinators, florists, DJs... and more. Only
$5.00 admission per person, w hich includes a gift bag and raffle. All proceeds benefit the Religious School.
Our Temple Youth
Checking in with
The first weekend of Chanukah was crazy busy for CHARLEY members. Not only did the kids prepare latkes for over 150 members
of the congregation, they also participated in the serv ice. That night, they held a mini-Maccabia Color War with competitions as
simple as writing cheers and as complicated as epic sword battles. There w as also a v ery difficult social program on human trafficking.
The kids w atched a few documentaries about modern slavery and held a discussion. At six o'clock the nex t morning, they w ere
w oken by screaming and w ater guns and forced into a small dark room. When they were finally let out, they had to follow the orders
of those w ith the guns. It w as a very ex periential learning process for every one inv olv ed. Very special thanks go to Claudia Strobing
for taking ov er the kitchen, and to Chery l Roberts for helping her to get those latkes out on time. And Erling Roberts is my new hero,
for stay ing all night. Thanks so much Erling!
And so a new year has begun, and CHARLEY will be electing a new board this month. Props go out to our old board for doing
such great work this year. They created meaningful programs and serv ices, brought in new members, and made CHARLEY really
News from our Temple Sisterhood
Happy New Year!! Wow, we can't believe it is 2010!
What a year 2009 was! For starters, we took over as Co-Presidents and we have been
very busy with our Board, planning many fun and informative events. As you all make
your New Year's resolutions, how about making a resolution to come to one of our
events in 2010. If you are not yet a member, it’s never to late to join. As always, you can
be as active as you want, but we are sure that once you come to one of our events you
will be hooked. Our members are warm, caring, kind, giving and love to have fun!
Bonnie and Nadine
To recap, 2009 began with our first annual "Progressive Dinner". It was so successful that we are having it again and we
hope you are planning to attend on Jan 9th. We were all spiritually renewed at our annual Retreat. We had our Sisterhood
Shabbat in May, and our "Paid up Event" in August. We cooked for Crisis Ministries as well as donated needed supplies to
My Sister's House. We had 2 "small group luncheons" which were very well attended. In October our own Jill Conway
spoke about the college admission process, and in December we had the "Cookies and Cosmos" Chanukah cookie swap.
Our only fundraiser, the 59 th Annual Bazaar, was a successful event that combined great company and delicious food! We
want to thank EVERYONE who came out to support this event and EVERYONE who volunteered their time to help. We
couldn't have done it without each and every one of you! All of the funds raised goes to support both the Temple and the
Religious School.
We both attended the URJ/WRJ Biennial in Toronto. We came home feeling very inspired in many ways. This year's theme
was "Sustaining our World". The focus was on faith, peace and "going green". We heard from speakers such as Michael
Oren, the Israeli Ambassador, who spoke of faith and Dr. Izzeldin Abuelaish, a Palestinian whose 3 daughters and niece
were killed in Gaza who spoke about peace. Judy Feld Carr came and won an award for single-handedly organizing the
release of over 3000 Syrian Jews between 1977 and 1991. We heard from Rabbis from newly formed WRJ affiliates who
spoke about the difficulties in bringing Reform Judaism to Israel and we watched as 2 U.S. synagogues donated Torah's to
2 "sister synagogues" in Israel. The spiritual workshops were amazing and the musical entertainment was so uplifting,
particularly Sat. evening when entertainers from Jewish, Muslim, Buddhist and Christian faiths all sang together on one
stage! That is what peace is all about! The URJ president, Rabbi Eric Yoffie, summed up the importance of "going green"
both from an environmental and ethical perspective. He encouraged us all to reduce consumption of meat as well as
reduce the use of paper, including limiting paper products at Temple events. This is the time of year that many of you
make resolutions. Let's make some resolutions to help "sustain our world". Let's keep the theme of the biennial and follow
some recommendations suggested by Rabbi Yoffie. As a Sisterhood we will be encouraging less use of paper and more
information sent only by computer. Let's try to carpool to events. Not only does it help our environment, it helps form the
bonds that "Sisterhood" is all about.
Let's make this a great year! Let’s do it together, have fun and keep it green.
Happy New Year!
Notes from the Choir … ♫
Do y ou hav e a fav orite song that y ou hav en’t heard Koleinu sing for a w hile? A traditional oldie but goodie, a
News from our Brotherhood
The brotherhood is kicking off the 2010 year with great programs! Our first meeting will be held on
January 28, 2010 at 6:30 PM in the Social Hall. We will enjoy a speaker, Dr. Fletcher Derrick, who
month there will be a program on Hypertension by Dr. Perry Halushka.
All of the Brotherhood meetings are casual and are designed for us to share each other's
company and fellowship. We invite all men of KKBE to attend and enjoy.
WHAT IS THE JEWISH VIEW OF GOD?
An old joke says that when two Jews get together there are three opinions. Does this apply even to our ideas about
God? Mark your calendars for Monday evening, January 11, 2010 at 7:00 PM when Lifelong Learning will present our
own Rabbi Bob Seigel who will speak on JEWISH VIEWS OF GOD. Begin the New Year on a high note with this
informative and thought provoking evening.
DOCENT DELIGHTS
“A moving story of the Charleston Jewish
community by an excellent tour guide.”
So wrote one visitor to our historic Temple. They could be
referring to YOU!
We are looking for volunteers to help our current group of docents, be it once a week or once a month. You will be given
materials and will be trained. And then begins the best part: representing our Temple and basking in the kudos from our
guests. Just read the sign- in book in the lobby and you will know why we have so many long-time docents.
If you would like to know more or have any questions, please contact me.
Coming up at KKBE From Our VP of Programming
Forging Friendships
at our Special Events
Happy New Year! Well, it’s only been seven months and I think I’m getting the hang of this
position. Working with our Staff and Board is enlightening. It’s amazing how our shared deep
commitment to KKBE serves as the foundation to maintaining good relationships and always
doing what’s best for you!
When it was suggested that I write for Chai Lights I began to think (oh no, she’s thinking!) about the value of our
programming. Then my mind quickly shifted to my closest friends in Charleston – I met almost all of them through my
KKBE friends or because of my affiliation with KKBE. It’s so comforting knowing that when I go to services, attend a
congregational dinner or special event I see people I know and meet new people with whom I already share a deep rooted
belief, Just like an old friend.
What’s Going On?
January 29: Tu B’shvat Seder and Service
A delightful way to experience a special seder in honor of the Jewish New Year for Trees! Our seder plates include many
goodies grown on trees and is followed by a lovely dinner. The dinner is $15/person and $18 for guests. You can reserve
a seat by sending an RSVP to MHaspel@kkbe.org and send your check or pay online through our website by
January 15th.
February 5-7: KKBE’s Shabbaton!
Get ready to have some fun with our theme, the 10 Commandments! We’ll start with an entertaining “getting to know you”
program, congregational dinner and service, then set up your tent for the night or 2 nights! Day 2 includes breakfast, Torah
study, an array of traditional and creative services, lunch, projects and an evening Havdalah service. Sunday morning we
have breakfast, Hebrew students go to class and everyone else prepares for a group service and presentation (to all
religious school students) from our weekend. You can sign up on the attached form by January 25 th !
February 23: Tri-Congregational Concert
February 26: Purim!
A Murder Mystery Dinner and adult party is being planned for this special Purim celebration. Following the service (ages
12 and older please, the children’s costume service is Saturday morning, Feb. 27) you’ll be ushered to your table for a
fascinating dinner. After dinner, adults only for dancing and good cheer!
(Our plan includes a taxi service standing by.)
Care to help?
We have wonderful teams of volunteers who would love to share the fun of making these events possible. The way we
work is a lot of people doing a little! So don’t worry about volunteering; we want you to have fun.
