Rabbi's Message
Volume 14 Number 10 — Tishri 5773 ~ Cheshvan — October 2012
As we roll into October—having welcomed 5773, still savoring Yom
Kippur's gift of a spiritual clean slate—may we carry the energy and
inspiration of our communal celebrations into the New Year.
One of the great blessings to already come our way is a growth in our
membership. KKBE is now well over 500 households strong! (I feel like
balloons and confetti should rain down from the ceiling when we say
that.) Yet that is merely a number. Our real strength comes when each
of our households feels connected and tied to the others.
When we gather for Shabbat evening dinners at the congregation, and
when we join in Motzi (the blessing over bread) on Shabbat mornings, it has become our custom to
mimic the braided loaf of challah by holding hands—and elbows, and shoulders—until we too are all
"braided" together, symbolizing the kind of community we hope to be.
Toward that end, these are the efforts that must guide us all year long:
-Helping those who join our KKBE family to feel at home and comfortable participating in
our Reform practices, worshipping in our sanctuary, joining in educational opportunities,
becoming engaged leaders.
-Recognizing that—with each new member, each new family—we are no longer the
same KKBE. We have new talents, interests and resources in our community that we
must get to know, as well.
-Remembering that being a "welcoming congregation" comes, not from a one time warm
welcome, but from an ongoing, nurturing embrace.
The Union for Reform Judaism describes three areas of focus with respect to congregational
membership: Recruitment, Integration, and Retention. So, while our 500+ membership number
reflects well upon the first area (and, go ahead, let’s pat ourselves on the back—we deserve it!), there
is still much to be done.
Allow me to share two opportunities:
1) For new members: Please join us for a New Member Orientation breakfast on Sunday,
October 14th, 9:30 - 10:30 am. We look forward to the opportunity to get to know you; share a
bit about the history, programming and organization of our congregation; and make introductions
to some of our staff and lay leaders.
2) For all members: The Membership Committee is looking for new participants and new ideas.
We are all de facto members of the membership committee, but if you are interested in getting
involved in a more formal way, please contact our Membership Chair, Mark Mandel at
mark.mandel@comcast.net or (843) 870-8773.
President’s Message
Dear Congregants,
We are at the tail end of another year of High Holy Days and at the beginning of a new Jewish
New Year. We w ill be celebrating Simchat Torah within the nex t w eek or so. I confess that
w hile I w as grow ing up I nev er realized w hat a joyous celebration this holiday could be. There is
still time for y ou to attend. While the Simchat Torah service may not entail the silly fun as Purim
does, it is one of the most uplifting celebrations w e hav e in Judaism. If y ou haven’t ex perienced
it here at KKBE, I urge y ou to do so.
If w e have reflected upon our past and our future during these Day s of Aw e, it is only proper to
look ahead to w hat w e ex pect in the short term. This is a time of inspection and introspection
that affords us an opportunity to take close stock of w hat w e hav e done, w hat w e should be
doing and w hat we want to do. The follow ing are some of the business items that w e all need to
consider.
On Sunday , October 21 st , our congregational meeting w ill take place at 11:00 am in the Barbara Pearlstine Social Hall. There is
momentous business to address and it w ould be ex tremely gratify ing if all of the seats w ere taken. First and foremost, there w ill be a
motion to engage Rabbi Alex ander for a fiv e year term. Many of us still marv el that it has already been tw o and a half y ears since she
arriv ed. The Rabbi and the Congregation have a mandate to notify each other at least six months prior to the ex piration of the
current contract and that contract expires on June 30, 2013. In addition, there is a motion that was put on the table at the prev ious
congregational meeting to sw itch from tw o meetings a year to just one meeting. A change in the fiscal y ear allows this to happen.
Ev en w ith this change, it nev er deprives congregants or the president from requesting an interim meeting should it ev er become
necessary.
Lastly, w e continue to make progress on our four-pronged priority list. We hav e made inroads tow ard the issues at the historic
Coming Street Cemetery; advanced our need to repair and enhance the sanctuary , gotten a decent start tow ard endowing the
Rabbinic Pulpit and made contingency plans to deal w ith the only debt that KKBE has, the remainder of the Capital Campaign. You
w ill hear more detailed reports on all of these at the meeting.
Shalom,
Religious School Updates Amy I. W. Horner, M.A., Temple Educator
September at KKBE: We gathered (and gathered again, and again) at our beautiful synagogue to
w orship, reconnect w ith friends, and begin a new year together. From infancy to adulthood, w e each had
something special on Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur: babysitting for our y oungest, our Family Service
for our preschool and early elementary school children, the special Machzor Scrapbook Project for our
students in grades 3-5, our musical CHARLEY serv ice for our six th through tw elfth graders, plus multiple
serv ices for adults. As this issue goes to press, w e will enjoy our annual Sukkot celebration, with a
Sukkah lov ingly built by our Brotherhood and a festiv e Sukk-out provided by our Sisterhood and
Brotherhood.
Our Tishrei holiday season concludes in October, w ith the truly festiv e observ ance of Simchat Torah the
ev ening of Sunday, October 7 at 7:00 p.m. Just as we “always” do, we will sing, dance, and unroll an
entire Torah scroll. This y ear’s Simchat Torah Flag Contest includes categories for the Most Original
Shape, The Loudest (you decide what that means!), and the Most Creativ e Use of Office Supplies. Members of the Religious School
Committee w ill judge the flags, and w e can all join in and enjoy the parade! (One restriction: no glitter, please. It stay s in the carpet for
y ears.)
This y ear’s Simchat Torah service will include the Consecration of our kindergarten students and our new students of any age.
Consecration marks the beginning of a student’s formal Jew ish education. At this beautiful piece of our service, our students w ill be
called up to the bimah to recite the sh’ma, word by word, after the Rabbi, and to receiv e the gift of a miniature Torah scroll.
In the last month, our students took giant steps into Jewish education and Jewish life. We began a new school y ear, w ith our returning
students coming in taller and more grown-up than they were in May. We celebrated w ith our new B’nei Mitzvah, and began a new Jewish
y ear together. Soon our kindergarten students w ill take another giant step, at Consecration. All of us at KKBE can take steps into Jew ish
learning and Jew ish life, ev en if w e are long past kindergarten. We can join our friends (old or new ) at a serv ice, ev en if we don’t go
often. We can try a new Jew ish food or come to a program w e haven’t attended before. We can visit KKBE’s library and check out a
book, or v isit the gift shop to add something new to enhance our Jewish home.
Start y our new, Jewish y ear w ith us!
Shalom,
Did you Know?
This banner in the Religious School stairway welcomes
our students (talmidim) and reminds them of
the Hebrew date each morning as they arrive for
class. Many thanks to Tamar BenArdout, Chelsea
Cash and Ola Charlotte Cash for crafting it for us
and changing the date each week!
Did you know that Dr. Columbus Da Vega (1830-1882)., who is buried in the Coming
Street Cemetery, had a floating hospital ship in the Charleston Harbor during the
Civil War? He administered to both Union and Confederate soldiers. Family lore
has it that he performed the first appendectomy in South Carolina on his kitchen
table (and the patient survived!).
Executive Director’s Message
It Isn’t Over Until…Everyone Dances!
KKBE’s Sanctuary seen
through the Sukkah roof
As September ends and October begins, we remember the
holidays aren’t over yet!
There’s Sukkot-.For forty years, our ancestors wandered the
Sinai after the Exodus and the Torah says "clouds of glory"
surrounded and hovered over them, keeping them safe from the
dangers of the desert. Ever since, on the 15 th of Tishri and the
following seven days, we remember God's kindness and reaffirm
our trust in Him by dwelling in a Sukkah—a booth that is
intentionally temporary, in fact, roofs are supposed to allow us to look up and see the stars at
night.
Some of us build a Sukkah in our backyard and eat our meals there. KKBE’s Brotherhood builds
a Sukkah for our congregation in the front Temple Garden This year, the first night of Sukkot
is Sunday, September 30th th. Before the Sukkot Service begins, Lois Sugarman decorates the
Sanctuary for our celebration of the autumn harvest.
The Sukkot Evening Service starts at 5:45 pm and afterwards we enjoy our “ Sukk-out” in the Temple Garden. Burgers (some veggie burgers, too)
and hot dogs will be grilled to perfection by the Brotherhood. (We count on all members to bring a side dish, too!) It’s a wonder-filled evening with
worship, food, friends, family and fun. We’ll have a chance to welcome Sukkot, eat in the Sukkah and enjoy a delicious meal in the Garden
together. A Sukkot Morning Service is held on Monday, October 1 st at 11:30 am.
There’s Simchat Torah! On Simchat Torah we celebrate the completion of the yearly cycle of
Torah reading and begin anew. We mark our celebration by re-rolling the Torah, dancing and
singing with the Torah. Please join us for the Simchat Torah Service and Celebration at 7:00
pm on October 7 th.
We’ll award prizes to the children for their flags. And there is a Simchat Torah’s Morning and
Yizkor Service at 11:30am on Monday, October 8 th.
Then, the holidays beginning 5773 are officially complete. We have welcomed the New Year,
asked forgiveness for the harm we may have done others, we have eaten in the Sukkah, and our
Torahs now open to Genesis. Scores of people made our High Holy Days meaningful and we
are grateful to them all.
On behalf of the staff of our Synagogue, please accept my heartfelt wish that 5773 will be a sweet,
happy, healthy, prosperous year for us ALL.
We’v e made our w ay through another High Holy Day s season. What hav e w e learned? Are w e all done til
reminded us at the beautiful Selichot serv ice to look deeply within ourselves and find w ays to improv e our
The Gibbes Museum of Art will be featuring the work
of
Willard Hirsch
from September 21st to December 30, 2012
“ As Charleston's premier sculptor of the twentieth
century, this exhibition examines the body of work
Willard Hirsch developed over the course of his
fifty year career.”
In conjunction with a major retrospective of Willard
Hirsch's sculpture at the Gibbes Museum of Art, the
College of Charleston's Addlestone Library will offer an
exhibition of artifacts, photographs, and manuscript
materials relating to the artist and his family. Drawn from
Special Collections, the exhibit will be on display on the
When you have a celebration—a birthday or
anniversary— really any time you want to honor
someone you love, sponsoring an Oneg is a lovely
way to share the celebration with KKBE's entire
congregation! Sometimes several families choose to
share an Oneg Sponsorship, which makes it twice the
fun.
On the left are dates that still need Oneg sponsors.
Sponsoring an Oneg costs approximately $144. Please
contact Diane Katz at 795-2611 to schedule your date!
