And, with ourattention consumed by the large, communal celebrations of RoshHashanah and Yom Kippur, it can also be easy to glance over the otherwonderful ritual highlights on the calendar this month.Tashlich (on September 5 @ 4:30 pm) is one of my favorite rituals of the High Holy Day season. After a day of majestic prayer, elaborate music and dressy clothes, it feels particularly poignant tocasually stroll over to Waterfront Park, spend some quiet time reflecting on our personal misgivingsfrom the past year, and physically let our faults go by symbolically casting our sins (crumbs ofmatzah and bread) into the water. Each year, it helps ensure that I feel lightened, rather thandrained, at the end of a long spiritual day.The festival of Sukkot (beginning on the evening of September 18) invites us to step outside of ournormal routines by dwelling outside of our normal buildings and taking up residence in constructedbooths instead. Beginning with our Sukk-Out on September 18, and continuing with our festivalmorning service on September 19 and Shabbat morning service on September 21, we will make asmuch use of our temple Sukkah as possible, enjoying the beautiful space that the Brotherhoodcreates for us each year. Our Simchat Torah festivities (on September 25 @ 7:00 pm) have become the joyous celebrationwe had envisioned – we embrace and dance with the Torahs, parade with flags, and surroundourselves with one unrolled scroll that wraps around the entire perimeter of the sanctuary. Wemight say it’s the high note on which we officially end the High Holy Days, except there is still oneever so sweet and touching note to come...On September 28 @ 10 am, our congregation will celebrate Consecration, the beginning of ournewest Religious School students’ formal Jewish studies, a path that (we hope) will lead throughConfirmation and on to a lifetime of committed Jewish exploration and ever strengthening Jewishidentity. And this year’s Consecration ritual is particularly significant to me and my family as it willmark a significant milestone on our son, Eli’s, personal Jewish journey (independent of his mommyand daddy, the rabbis) – a journey we feel so blessed he is able to make as a part of thiswonderful congregational family. With every best wish for all that this busy season holds –L'Shalom,Rabbi Stephanie AlexanderbâÜ `|áá|ÉÇ fàtàxÅxÇàThe mission of Kahal Kadosh Beth Elohim shall be to serve the religious needs offamilies and individuals through programs of lifelong Jewish education (Torah),inclusive communal worship and ritual (Avodah), and the ongoing quest for greaterjustice, peace and acts of loving kindness (Gemilut Chasadim).KKBE 90 Hasell Street, Charleston, SC 29401 Tel. President’s MessageJudaism promises us the opportunity to work for a meaningful world. Our people’sstory spreads over many generations and years. When we identify with those whocame before us and when we are invested in those who will come after us, then webecome part of efforts much larger than our own individual lives. Each of us mustassume the formidable task of inspiring the next generation as they face the awesome, but voluntary, task of carrying on the chain of tradition. Through these experiences, wecome to realize that we are a critical link in this chain, hence, the concept andcommand of l’dor v’dor. To keep our word, Reform, an active verb these High Holy Days, we will continue inour quest to be inclusive for all. With open hearts and minds we have searched for anew way to be one community. Under the leadership of Rabbi Alexander, a verydiverse small group was formed to search for a way for us to be together this season. Through their creative thinkingand hard work, this year for the very first time in many years, Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur morning services willallow us to worship together in a space that is accessible to everyone. We will cross all ages and generations in ourcongregation with a service that will be inclusive and meaningful in different ways for each of us. Think of thosereformers in our early congregation who in 1824 took the first steps toward Reform Judaism in America. They werebrave indeed! Change is never easy. It takes courage and conviction and vision. That is my hope for us as we moveforward into 5774.Quoting from Mishkan T’filah, our new Reform Siddur:“We are a People in whom the past endures, in whom the present is inconceivable without moments gone by…”May we all have a healthy and happy New Year.L’Shanah Tova tikatevu,Campers at CampColemanKKBE PresidentHelp us welcomeour newestKKBE membersWho Joined in August:Seth RosenzweigSidney & Roberta GordonNeal & Marilyn GordonJoshua Chinitz & Meagan LabriolaCarolyn & Jerry WilliamsAnita accepting a CampColeman Awardfor outstandingachievement inColeman CamperRecruitmentSeptember 2013 ChaiLights Elul ~ Tishri 5773/5774 Page 3

Religious School UpdatesAmy I. W. Horner, M.A., Temple EducatorThis year, the new academic year and new Jewish calendar year begin nearly simultaneously. The 5774 school year began deliciously on Opening Day, with a pancake breakfast cooked andserved by members of the KKBE Brotherhood. The sweet introduction to learning is traditional, and the happy, welcoming atmosphere that the Brotherhood creates for our students is quicklybecoming an essential part of our first day at school. Thank you to Sewell Kahn and GregWensman for arranging the pancake breakfast, and to the Brotherhood members who came outon Sunday morning to welcome our children to a new year.Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur arrive at the very beginning of September. During ourmorning services, held in the Memminger Auditorium so we can all worship together, we willagain offer our special High Holy Day program just for students in grades 3-5, featuring “My Machzor Scrapbook.” TheMachzor Scrapbook was designed in collaboration with Raelle Saulson, who is now our fourth grade teacher. On bothRosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, parents are encouraged to bring their third-, fourth- and fifth-graders to the Main Serviceand worship as a family. Students are invited to pick up their personal Machzor Scrapbooks, as well as crayons andpencils to use in the scrapbook, before the start of the service. The Scrapbooks are designed to be used during theservice, and they contain questions, writing prompts, and open space for drawing and writing, all with the themes of theHigh Holy Days. Relevant page numbers in the Machzor are included throughout the Machzor Scrapbook so children cankeep pace with the service or not - either way will work.Midway through the service, Rabbi Alexander will announce that students in grades 3-5 may take their MachzorScrapbooks and meet me outside the main service. We will use a separate room for the remaining time, with suppliesavailable for decorating their scrapbooks. Students with questions will have the opportunity to ask them! We will have anadditional hands-on project each holiday. Parents can pick up their children at the conclusion of the main service. After the High Holy Days comes the holiday of Sukkot, with the joyous holiday of Simchat Torah at the end. Our flagcontest has become a tradition, and this year’s categories are brand-new. Awards will be given at two age levels in eachcategory for the flags that are The Shiniest, The Sportiest, and The Most Israeli. Our kindergarten and new students will be consecrated - officially welcomed to our school - on Shabbat morning,September 28. Kindergarteners are asked to arrive at 9:45 am for our 10 am service. Consecrants will be called to thebimah to recite the Sh’ma together. Each consecrant will receive a certificate, a miniature Torah scroll, and a special gift.Everyone is welcome to attend as we celebrate this time in our students’ lives.Important Dates: please see the High Holy Day service schedule for service timesSeptember 1: No school (Labor Day weekend.)September 15: No school (Yom Kippur weekend.)September 28: ConsecrationShalom,Amy HornerKKBE Temple EducatorPage 4 September 2013 ChaiLights Elul ~ Tishri 5773/5774

Execuve Director’s MessageFrom South Philadelphia to South CarolinaRecently, my family and I sat down for a meal at a diner in South Philadelphia not far fromour house. There are many diners where we live but this one is known for its good food.We were greeted with “How YOUS doing?”, which is grammatically incorrect but regionallyperfect. I started to think about this question and to reflect on our upcoming move toCharleston where the common refrain is “How Y’ALL doing?” I thought, Are these twogreetings so different?” They are both colloquialisms asking for the same information,“How are YOU doing?” with the YOU being the common denominator. With any new job comes the responsibility to learn as much as possible from the past inorder to enhance the future. Given the 264 years of history that are KKBE, YOU are in avery unique position as the cradle of Reform Judaism in America and being part of thiscontinuum is an honor. KKBE is YOUR congregation but you have the distinction of being an internationalattraction, bringing countless tourists each year.As I start my position at Kahal Kadosh Beth Elohim, I look forward to meeting Y’ALL and finding out how YOUS doing. Itis YOU the congregants that make this a strong and vibrant community.Thank you for welcoming me and my family into your family of families. I wish Y’ALL a sweet, healthy and happy NewYear.Shalom,AlexExecutive DirectorAlex GrumbacherIntro to JudaismFor those interested in pursuing conversion toJudaism, interfaith couples, or anyone lookingfor an engaging overview of Jewish belief, tradition and practice. This course will be taught by Rabbi StephanieAlexander, Rabbi Anthony Holz,Rabbi Robert Seigel and Rabbi Aaron ShermanRegistration fee - $50 per studentThursdays 7 pm - 8:30 pm ,16 sessionsbeginning October 3, 2013.To enroll, please contact NatalieHernandez at nhernandez@kkbe.org.Sukkot Festival Evening ServiceWednesday, September 18th at 5:45pmOur annual Sukk-Out Celebration, sponsored by KKBEBrotherhood and Sisterhood, will follow in the templegarden.RSVP to attend the Sukk-Out by registering on our websitewww.kkbe.org by September 11. Vice President of AdministraonBen GlassOn August 16, we will be loading up the car, making the long drive to Tuscaloosa, Alabama, and dropping our son off for his first year of college, and our first year without one of ourchildren in the house. I am sure there will be much crying by us, and, once we are gone anda respectful amount of time has passed, much celebrating by Joshua. I know we are hardlyextraordinary in this endeavor. Millions of people do the same thing every year across thecountry, and doubtless many of you have previously gone through this process once ormany times. It seems appropriate that every year, the beginning of every college career is soonfollowed by Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. No, not because so many Freshmen quickly need to repent and seekforgiveness. It is because, like college, the High Holy Days give us an opportunity to begin again. You start college with theability to improve on what you did in high school. If your grades weren’t quite what they should have been, you can work onstudy habits and start with a new set of professors, none of whom have any preconceived notions about what kind of studentyou will be. If you didn’t have many friends in high school, you have a new opportunity to meet people without them judging youthrough the lens of your “popularity.”Like college, though, the High Holy Days are not about getting a clean slate. Rather, they are an opportunity to examine wherewe could do better, work to improve our actions, and try again. Here at KKBE, we have done much right over the years. Butwith a new year comes the opportunity to look at those areas where we could improve, come up with strategies to do better, andtry again. This is one of the things we, as a Board of Trustees have committed to doing. In the coming months, you will learn of efforts weare making to develop strategic plans in multiple areas, including communications, public relations, facility improvements, andcapital development. You may be asked to contribute your opinions or your expertise to help us realize our vision for the futureof KKBE. Please do what you can to assist us. I look forward to seeing all of you at High Holy Day Services.L’Shalom,Ben, KKBE VP of AdministrationCelebrate Simchat Torah With Us!Wednesday, September 25 at 7 pmJoin your KKBE Family as we sing and dance with the Torah! As I write this I find it hard to believe that school starts in just afew weeks. Where did the summer go? Whether we like it or not, we're coming to the busiesttime of year for many of us. The kids are off to school, various committees and organizationsare gearing up and like squirrels gathering nuts we begin to prepare for less light and lesswarmth in our days. The upcoming High Holidays will give us an opportunity to reflect on thingswe could've done better, the apology we should have offered or the wrong we might haverighted. We come out feeling renewed! What better time to plan how to continue your"nourishment of the soul" through the rest of the year by signing up for the 2013 Scholar-In-Residence weekend to be held October 18 – 20.I will admit I had no knowledge of our guest scholar, Rabbi Richard Address, prior to the start of our planning. But all it took was oneGoogle search for me to realize that I wouldn't dare miss a session! Rabbi Address' life work is centered on "Sacred Aging," the trendtowards longevity and the relationships among and between generations that can make it meaningful. But particularly interesting to me ishis focus on the baby-boomer generation…those of us born between 1946 and 1964. THERE ARE 79 MILLION OF US! Rabbi Addresshosts “Boomer Generation Radio” on WWDB-AM in Philadelphia as well as the virtual forum www.jewishsacredaging.com, where he andother experts visit a myriad of issues that affect this demographic as well as those affecting other generations. A Message from KKBE's Music DirectorSo you wonder what it's going to be like observing High Holy Days' mornings at Memminger Auditorium? I can't tell you exactlywhat it's going to be like, but I can tell you that you will hear the familiar voices of your volunteer choir Koleinu supplemented bya few professional singers. What's more, you will get to see their faces, because Koleinu will be up front next to our bimah in fullview of the congregation. In addition, some songs will led by our CHARLEY song leaders who are rehearsing both with Robin Shuler and with me andJulia Harlow, Koleinu's accompanist, for some collaborative music. All the music is specifically chosen for our High Holy Daysand will elevate our services and serve our overall High Holy Days theme of one congregation under one roof.Overall you will hear much of the same High Holy Days music you heard last year, but there are four new pieces you shouldlisten for: On Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur mornings, you will hear a new arrangement of Debbie Friedman's “Sh'ma/AndYou Shall Love”. Please sing along—the words will be in the announcement sheet! The tune you know will be led by thesongleaders and part of our choir, while the rest of the choir will add beautiful harmonies and sing some of the Hebrew words ofthe V'ahavata. On Yom Kippur, you will hear lovely new versions of “Or Zarua”, “P'tach Lanu”, and “Ya'aleh”. You will also hearsix new solo voices from our choir! So, rest assured that while there are a few new tunes, you will feel at home with the music of the High Holy Days. And for thefirst time ever during the High Holy Days, you will be able to make eye contact and connect with your choir—so be sure to givethem an extra smile and a little wave. We will help each other feel at home in our new worship space.HeidiWe invite you to bring your family and join yourfriends for a day of fun and delicious food andmore....
