Rabbi's Message
Volume 14 Number 1 — Tevet ~ Shevat 5772 — January 2012
I w rite these words in the end of December, freshly off the plane
from the URJ’s 71 st Biennial Convention outside of Washington,
D.C.—the enthusiastic spirit of the 5000-delegate-strong
assembly still rev erberating in my heart, mind and soul. How ever,
when you read these words, in January, I believe that enthusiasm
and energy will still abound. I look forw ard to numerous
occasions and ways though w hich to share overv iews and
insights I and our ten other delegates (lay leaders and staff)
gained at the conference. We will be sharing in Board,
Sisterhood, and committee meetings. We’v e brought new ideas and frameworks for temple
programming, w orship and our classrooms. Many experiences w ill find their way into
sermons and divrei Torah, to be sure. And please look for cov erage of the Biennial in the
February issue of the Jewish Voice, as well.
But for now I w ant to share the pow er and inspiration of one particular presentation: A
celebration of the Religious Action Center (RAC) and “50 Years of Social Justice
Leadership.” The presentation, in and of itself, was mov ing: a montage of filmed vignettes,
still images, and live speakers capturing the breadth and depth of impact the RAC—and, by
ex tension, all of us in the Reform Mov ement—have had on the key issues of the last fiv e
decades. Soviet Jew ry. Women’s Health. GLBT Equality . (The entire presentation can be
view ed at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v =xiXPQ6DCf7M.)
Yet no cause is more striking than the where it all began—the Civ il Rights Movement. The
Religious Action Center was born out of the fight for civ il rights. The Leadership
Conference on Civ il and Human Rights w as long housed at the RAC and for 30 years
almost every major piece of civil rights legislation w as strategized and organized at the
Center. In fact, the historic Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965 were
both drafted in the RAC’s conference room. The Religious Action Center was a key partner
in organizing the historic March on Washington, where Dr. King electrified the nation with
his “I Hav e a Dream” speech, and several early presidents of the NAACP w ere leaders in
the Reform movement, as w ell.
On Sunday, January 8 th , KKBE w ill host our 16 th Annual Martin Luther King, Jr.
Celebration in partnership with Morris Brown AME Church. The event is not only an
important commemoration of Dr. King’s legacy and teachings, but an inspiring affirmation of
the bonds that have historically linked the Jewish and African-American communities
nationally , and which w e striv e to renew, especially in work of social justice, here in our
local Charleston community, as well. May we always be joined with our brothers and
sisters in fellowship as we w ork to ensure equal rights and equal access for all.
President’s Message
Coming Street Cemetery
Our pre-Revolutionary War cemetery on Coming Street is not only of great historic significance to
our congregation, but to Jewish Charleston, Charleston itself and to the history of the United
States. Buried there are soldiers from w ars starting w ith the Revolution. The last person to be
interred there w as our long-time historian, Solomon Breibart (Uncle Solly to many of us).
The cemetery has endured the rav ages of w ar, storm, earthquake, vandalism and time. To
maintain this sacred space, there is much needed work to be done to the w all, headstones, tombs,
monuments and the grounds. Dr. Robert Russell, Preservationist and Professor at the College of
Charleston, completed a three-phase survey w hich prioritized the work needed: 1) Immediate
repairs needed for safety; 2) Secondary needs that w ill deteriorate quickly if not addressed within
the nex t few y ears; 3) Longer term needs to ensure the proper maintenance of our congregation’s
treasure.
Work has already been done w ithin the ability of our congregation to support it. An ad-hoc committee has formed, headed by our
Vice President of Administration, Anita Rosenberg, and Cemetery Committee Chair and Members, Morton Ellison, Mary Radin, Ed
Kronsberg, Louis Tick and Randi Serrins. They are supported closely in their endeav ors by our Executiv e Director, Floy Work. Floy
has been instrumental in helping obtain a grant to offset some of the planning stages of our work. A grant for $9,500 was obtained
from the Henry & Sy lvia Yaschik Foundation. We have sev eral other grant requests outstanding at this time, Amanda Barton, an
accomplished landscape architect, has been retained to help develop the plan and ov ersee the work.
To do ev ery thing necessary to Coming Street Cemetery will require ov er $500,000. Some small amounts of money come in the form
of contributions from those tourists and others w ho tour the cemetery w ith one of the limited number of docents with access. Some
hav e already donated to the cause to help make repairs to the grav es of their ow n ancestors. Others have given because of their
realization of the need.
If y ou hav e relativ es or long-time friends w ho “sleep in the dust” at Coming Street, w ould you consider supporting the cause? If y ou
just believ e that this is truly a need you want to support and that w e are obligated to do so, y our contributions w ould be w elcomed.
You can contact Floy or Anita for further information.
Shalom,
Keep the dream alive,
Keep the dream alive.
Every time we say a prayer, we keep the dream alive.
Sam Glaser, “Keep the Dream Alive”
In 2010, our Religious School hosted Sam Glaser, thanks to the Danielle, Julie and Stephen Ziff Youth Education
Endowment. During his visit Sam led all of the students in our Religious School on a musical walk through the
Torah, through Jewish history. “ Keep the Dream Alive” was one of the gorgeous songs that Sam and our students
sang together while parents and teachers watched and listened. To see our children relive our path from creation,
to Abraham and Sarah, to Egypt, and back to the land of Israel was an absolute joy. To know that our history and
traditions are alive in their hearts? There aren’t really words to express that feeling, although Sam’s lyrics help.
It was a delight to see some of those students, members of our sixth grade class, return to the bimah on
December 11 to perform “ Judging Antiochus,” a one-act play that was created by their teacher, David Frederick,
and edited by the students themselves. Our sixth graders studied the full history of the Chanukah story, and then jumped enthusiastically into their
play, the hypothetical trial of Antiochus for his crimes. As you can see from the photos (on page 8), the students took their roles as judge, bailiff, and
prosecuting and defense attorneys seriously while still creating a production that had their parents and fellow students laughing out loud. Once again,
there aren’t really words to fully express the feeling I had seeing our children tell the Chanukah story in their own way, making it crystal cle ar that they
have internalized the story, the importance of religious freedom, and the sense of their own (important) places in the Jewish community. Note: the jury
(played by completely unprepared parents) let Antiochus off easy, in the opinion of this writer...
December 11 was a busy day in the RS. Students participated in the play or watched it, welcomed Rabbi Alexander into their class (seventh grade)
and fried latkes (the fourth grade thanks Claudia Strobing for teaching that day!) And every student had the opportunity to visit the Dreidel Shop for
their holiday shopping. Many, many thanks to Karen Forman, the Dreidel Shop committee, and our ninth grade volunteers, for their hours of hard work,
shopping, setting up, helping with gift selections and wrapping. By the end of the morning, everyone was tired! Fortunately for the faculty, we were
invited to the home of Steve and Julie Ziff for a delicious, homemade lunch. What a treat to enjoy famous Ziff cooking with friends! Thank you, Julie
and Steve.
Quite a few of us then jumped into travel preparations, as the eleven-person-strong KKBE delegation packed up and headed to Washington, D.C. for
the URJ Biennial and WRJ conference. The photo (see page 3) shows our group, joined by Carrie Langsam and PJ Schwartz, enjoying dinner
together.
Keep the dream alive,
Keep the dream alive.
When we sing together, we keep the dream alive.
Sam Glaser, “Keep the Dream Alive”
And sing we did. Those of us who got up early for T’filah on Thursday found ourselves singing Oseh Shalom as we walked out of our service, Torah
scroll in the arms of the line leader, and joined those who had attended other services, also singing. Thanks to careful planning on the parts of the
service leaders, we all walked together, singing, to another room for the remainder of the morning service. I am grateful for the beautiful experience of
walking through a hotel with a few hundred fellow Reform Jews, singing a song of peace together.
We sang again on Friday afternoon, as the crowd of several thousand Reform Jews awaited the arrival of keynote speaker President Barack Obama.
Musician Josh Nelson led us in several planned and several spontaneous songs, keeping us all singing and laughing as we waited. It was well worth
the wait, as President Obama joined us to wish us Shabbat Shalom (“ a few hours early”) and share his thoughts, including comments on the week’s
Torah portion and his “unwavering” support for Israel, with us. Definitely, hard to put the feelings in that room into words!
When we return to “ regular” schedules in January and begin a new secular year, I encourage all of us to add experiences that “ keep the dream alive” to
our days. Whether we are celebrating a holiday, at home or at KKBE, talking to our children or a friend’s children about Religious School, participating
in a KKBE event, or “ living Jewishly” in any way, as our seventh graders discuss, we are taking our places in our Jewish story. And if we can sing while
we are there, so much the better.
Executive Director’s Message
Loosening the stopper
At KKBE, once is often just enough. I’ve noticed when we have attempted something and succeeded, we can find
ourselves saying, “ we’ve always done that!” I love the way we weave accomplishment into our history. It’s who we are
and how we define ourselves, until it comes to raising money! When raising money is mentioned, we collectively step
back, afraid we won’t be up to the task, that if we say we CAN, we might disappoint one another by falling short of our
collective goal. It’s as though we fear the challenge. But we always HAVE been generous. Really! We’ve always
raised money when we needed to support our synagogue. Just look around!
Want proof? We are quite literally surrounded by reminders of our congregants’ philanthropy—read the plaques
throughout our facilities--The Pearlstine Building, the Berlinsky Atrium Lobby, the Yaschik Library, the Freudenberg
Board Room, countless Religious School rooms, stained glass windows, benches, Torah covers, fountains, menorahs, glass tablets, names on
walls, bricks and rocks! Isn’t it ti me for us to recall how generous KKBE members have been and ARE?
In Poland they tell a tale of two rabbis who set out to raise funds for a worthy cause. They approached a wealthy man whose generosity had
become blocked. Once this Bill Gates of yore regularly gave loving, large gifts to help others, but over time his donations grew smaller and smaller.
One of the rabbis knew how to help him. How does giving cultivate generosity in others and ourselves? The rabbis accepted the wealthy man’s
small, half-penny donation which ‘loosened the stopper’ of his generosity. Each gift he gave the Rabbis, led to one more gift from him and those
around him. The rabbis’ willingness to receive the rich man’s gift, however small, restored the wealthy man to his goodness. KKBE has a rich
opportunity to ‘loosen its stopper.’
As President, David Jaffee has explained countless times in myriad settings to our congregation, KKBE has four “ pillars” on our development plan:
1) increasing our Endowment to fund the rabbinic staff we desperately need to serve our growing, vibrant congregation; 2) restoration of our
ancient Coming Street Cemetery which contains the remains of the men, women and children who founded Jewish history in America; 3) restoring
our beautiful Sanctuary to its glory; and 4) retiring our Capital Campaign debt. All the while, like walking and chewing gum, we must also have the
operating income needed to meet Temple expenses.
We can meet our congregation’s needs by planning and loosening the stopper of our members’ and friends’ generosity. There are more of us now
(508 member units), old members and new members, too. Each one of us is dedicated to KKBE’s mission—Torah, Worship and Acts of Loving
Kindness. As in the folktale, no gift will be too small. Everyone can find a way to help. (Just recently, Kate Fortney signed up to research grant
opportunities for us!) When each one makes a gift, we make the next one possible. By giving, we’ll be closer to KKBE’s goodness. Together, yes,
we absolutely CAN!
L’shalom,
Did ev ery one get enough latkes? I sure did! Betw een the holiday parties (thanks for the invites
my friends, I had a wonderful time!) and Chanukah in the Square, it was a great and busy holiday. So I’m
going to keep this short with just some housekeeping tasks. I want to thank everyone who turned out for
dinner with Coach Cremins, I know he enjoyed himself and several people have commented that they did
as well. The attendance may have set a record for the largest Brotherhood meeting ev er! Speaking of BH
meetings, on January 22 at 10 am; we w ill be holding our Brotherhood brunch meeting featuring 3 current
cadets and 3 alumni commenting on ”Jewish Life at the Citadel”. Gil Jacobs has just confirmed that he
will be speaking at the May 24th Brotherhood meeting on his experiences as an immigration official. Look
in your inbox for other upcoming events. If y ou have a topic you would like to know more about or you would like to speak on, please contact
A big thank you goes to Jim Klein, Charles Ziff, TR Williams and Chuck Altschul for their efforts at the Scholar in Residence
A TASTE OF TALMUD
Dates: February 2, 9 and 16 Time: 7:30 – 9:00 pm
Location: Kahal Kadosh Beth Elohim Instructor: Rabbi Stephanie Alexander
The Talmud is foundational to so much of w hat we study in Judaism – but, perhaps most
importantly , it is foundational to how w e study . Ov er the course of three sessions, participants
w ill get a “taste” of how the Talmud developed, w hat it cov ers, and w hat truths it hopes to
impart. We will gain an appreciation for how sages, sometimes several generations apart, can
engage in direct dialogue w ith one another. And we w ill engage in the dialogue, as well – both
w ith this quintessential tex t, and with one another.

A Call for Photographs
We need y our photographs of the Historic Coming Street Cemetery .
The Coming Street Cemetery is the oldest surv iving Jew ish cemetery in the South. It w as the Da Costa
burial ground from 1754 until 1764 when it w as deeded to Kahal Kadosh Beth Elohim as a cemetery for
any Jews in South Carolina who needed burial space. These w ere the y ears when we w ere all together as
one congregation of Jews. The ritual w as Sephardic Orthodox .
Current members of BSBI, Sy nagogue Emanu-El, and KKBE have family buried here. Ov er 800 burials
hav e taken place in the Coming Street cemetery. Buried here are tw elve Jews who fought in the American
Rev olution, six soldiers of the War of 1812, and tw enty -three Civ il War participants. Abraham Moise, the first Jewish lawyer licensed by
the state of South Carolina rests here. Penina Moise, America’s first Jew ish poet and hy mnist is interred here. Dr. Columbus De Vega,
w ho designed a floating hospital ship that w as stationed in Charleston Harbor during the Confederacy, lies here, as does Michael
Lazarus, w ho opened the Savannah Riv er to steam navigation, and Joshua Lazarus, w ho introduced gas lighting to Charleston.
This pre-Rev olutionary cemetery occupies about an acre of land. There are many grand trees in the cemetery , some are diseased and
need to be removed, one is growing against our pre-Revolutionary brick w all and compromising its structure, and many hav e roots that
are seriously damaging gravestones.
At one time there w as a receiving house on Coming Street w here the coffins w ere admitted to the cemetery. We hav e no pictorial
documentation of this.
It is thought the back brick w all might have had ornamental ironw ork on top of the brick (now there are cement blocks on the top of the
brick). Again, we have no documentation of this.
Some of the trees and bushes in the cemetery w ere obv iously not originally planted there. They are “volunteer” trees that hav e sprouted
in inappropriate places and are damaging the wall and grav estones. Again, we hav e no documentation of w hat the cemetery looked like
ev en fifty years ago.
We do hav e information of many of the grav esites thanks to records published by Rabbi Barnett Elzas in 1903 and updated through the
y ears by Samuel Jacobs, Thomas Tobias and Solomon Breibart, all of blessed memory.
Shalom CHARLEY!
CHARLEY
I hope you have had a great vacation from school, filled with lots of good times, and maybe some CHARLEY events this
past December?
As always we have a busy month ahead of us!
On January 8 th come one, come all, to our plenary where we will ratify the first ever CHARLEY constitution.
Then on the weekend of January 13 th -January 17 th travel with us to Atlanta, GA for Winter Regionals with NFTY-SAR!
This is a 9 th -12 th grade only event open only to dues-paying members. Go to www.nfty.org/sar to register and to
www.mycharley.com to pay your dues if you haven’t done so!
AND finally I hope to see you in the lounge on January 29 th as we do our monthly Sunday activity :-)
HOPE TO SEE YOU THIS MONTH!
Sammy Chavin
CHARLEY President
OUR TEENS NEED US!
April 27-29, 2012 KKBE is hosting the Temple Youth Group Regional
Spring Kallah. 250 teenagers will attend -- the largest number CHARLEY
has ever hosted! It's very exciting, yet daunting. KKBE will house and
transport the Kallah's attendees to and from events during the weekend so
we need KKBE's congregants to step up to the plate.
Won't you volunteer to house/transport the Kallah's young people during
this special weekend event? You don't need to be parents of teens to
serve. All you need is a willingness to help our Jewish youth enjoy worship
and fun with other regional synagogue teens!
Please call or email Cindy Zimmerman to learn about the weekend’s
itinerary.
Remember, it won't happen without your help!
Sign Up For Onegs!
When you have a celebration—a birthday or
anniversary— really any time you want to honor
someone you love, sponsoring an Oneg is a lovely
way to share the celebration with KKBE's entire
congregation! Sometimes several families choose to
share an Oneg Sponsorship, which makes it twice the
fun.
On the left are dates that still need Oneg sponsors.
Sponsoring an Oneg costs approximately $150. Please
1. You can make a bequest to KKBE easily, by inserting a few sentences into your will stating the sum you
w ish to leave: “I give KKBE $Amount.”
It’s revocable. The gift isn’t made until your death. Until then, y ou can change y our plans.
It’s tax-smart….y our estate can make unlimited tax deductible bequests to KKBE, a qualified charitable
organization.
2. You can make a residuary bequest, a gift from y our estate after all other bequests, debts and tax es hav e
been paid, for example, “I leav e KKBE 50% of all the rest, residue, and remainder of my estate.”
3. You can restrict y our gift to specific uses (for ex ample I leave $50,000 to KKBE’s Endowment, its Religious
School, or maintenance of KKBE properties) OR you can make an unrestricted gift w ithout conditions attached
“for KKBE’s unrestricted use and purpose.”
Thank you
I want to thank my KKBE family for all the
expressions of concern and support as well as all the
various kinds of help I received before, during, and
after my recent surgery. I felt surrounded by
warmth and encouragement and I am sure that has
contributed to a smooth and timely recovery.
Chicken Soup with Grits
A new DVD is available in Chosen Treasures.
It provides y'all with a little taste of Charleston.
Carolee Rosen Fox, OBM, was a 4th
generation member of KKBE and was one of
its most popular, well-respected and truly
memorable docents. This DVD captures a May
19, 2008 presentation to a visiting elder hostel.
In addition, there are shared reminiscences by
Fannie Appel-Rones, a life-long Charleston
resident, and her brother Sam. Both grew up
in "Little Jerusalem" and are first generation
Americans.
