Vice President of AdministrationDeAnneKKBE Vice President ProgramsBen GlassAs I w rite this, it is the w eek before the Congregation’s Annual Meeting, so I am taking a leap of faiththat y ou will elect me y our Vice President of Administration. If not, boy am I going to be embarrassedw hen this comes out. There is much to be done in the area of Temple Administration right now. Asy ou all know, our dear Floy has retired after her recent health scare. We have already begun theprocess of figuring ex actly w hat ty pe of Ex ecutiv e Director w e w ant to hire, and are preparing jobpostings for v arious media. We feel confident that w e w ill get a strong response, and our only limiton w ho we hire w ill be the budget with w hich w e are working. In the interim, Tamar BenArdout has been named Acting Temple Administrator and is av ailable tohandle any issue you might have directed to Floy in the past. Tamar, Natalie, and Liz have all stepped up to make sure theadministrativ e needs of the Temple hav e been met during this difficult time. Please join me in thanking them whenev er y ou see them.In addition, numerous congregants have pitched in by volunteering their time on a regular basis in the office, answ ering the phoneand screening v isitors at the door along w ith other tasks too numerous to list. We owe all of these folks an enormous debt ofgratitude. It is our hope that we w ill hav e a new Ex ecutiv e Director in place by July 1, and we plan for this person to take a v ery activ e role inw orking w ith our clergy and Board to set the v ision for our future. We also ex pect the new Executiv e Director to be heav ily inv olvedw ith development efforts, both w ith regard to our finances and our volunteer corps. We env ision an office structure in which theEx ecutiv e Director is ultimately in charge, but does not have to spend all of their time attending to the day-to-day operations of theTemple.I am looking forw ard to the many challenges ahead, and I am very excited to see w hat the nex t tw o y ears hold. I inv ite you to contactme any time with questions, concerns or suggestions.L’Shalom,Ben, KKBE VP of AdministrationNews from Our VP of ProgramsThey say “what was old is new again…” Well, one of those statements is definitely true…I sure dofeel old! I’m also happy to say that I’m finding a lot that’s new at KKBE. When Anita Rosenbergasked me to pinch-hit as VP of Programs for the nex t term I thought back to how it w as during themid-1990s w hen I held this position the first time. At that time KKBE's membership w as perhaps 1/3the size of w hat it is now . There w as a single full time staff person and a part time bookkeeper. We didn’t hav e a website or even a domain name (in fact, w e felt lucky if the internet w as working atall!) The entire Temple office (including the rabbi’s study ) w as housed in what is now the Gan Katanroom. At that time, if you chaired a committee or were in charge of any event, y ou pretty much hadto do it all. And w e did. Together, with a few other motiv ated v olunteers, we held the v eryfirst “Beach Bash” at the Citadel Beach house; put together one of the first Temple Retreats, held Kosher wine tastings, maintained astrong interfaith Outreach program, produced a 250th anniversary program series and held many other fun ev ents. It w as lots of fun.Fast forw ard about 20 y ears.... a lot has changed, hasn't it? But other things remain the same... there's still a lot of fun to be had. I'mexcited about w orking w ith KKBE's amazing staff, Rabbi Stephanie, and as it turns out, a Board made up of quite a few old friends asw ell as new ones. I've been given such support and encouragement from ev eryone, including a few congregants w ho hav egenerously offered to help out w ith programming for this year and nex t. I w ill need all of y ou!! On July 6th w e have the 2013 Fun inthe Sun Please give me a call at 830-1625 so w e can discuss how YOU can be involved!L’Shalom,DeAnne VanePage 6 May 2013 ChaiLights Iyar ~ Sivan 5773

Social Action“The core of our insight [as Reform Jews] is that serious Jew ish study inevitably leads to the soup kitchen; that serious prayer, amongother v ital things, is a w ay of preparing to do battle w ith injustice, that social justice without being grounded in tex t, w ithout a sense ofGod’s presence, is ephemeral and unsustainable. The heart of the argument is that there is no such thing as ‘Social Action Judaism,’that the thread of social justice is so authentically and intricately w oven into the many -colored fabric we call Judaism that if y ou seekto pull that thread out, the entire fabric unrav els, that the Judaism that results is distorted, is neutered, is rendered aimless.” – RabbiDavid Saperstein, Director of the Religious Action Center of Reform JudaismThis quote beautifully sums up what first fueled my desire to convert to Judaism and what continues to sustain me. I am honored tohave been able to be the Social Action Chair for the past 6 years and have learned much about Judaism and our wonderfulcongregation while in this position. I look forward to seeing both our Social Action and Social Justice work continue to grow asinspired congregants step in to fill this leadership position.Sincerely,LuAnn RosenzweigWriter’s ChavurahI entered the room cautiously. What in the world was I doing? I don’t belong here. How did I let myself get talked into this? But, peoplealw ays say you should get out of y our comfort zone occasionally. I was certainly out of mine. If I hadn’t been pursued by a trustedfriend, I nev er would have considered it. All of my insecurities were coming to the surface.I took my place at the table. We went around the room introducing ourselv es. Most of the participants had met together the monthbefore. I already knew many of them, but that didn’t reliev e my anx iety. I may hav e appeared calm to theoutside w orld, but I could barely focus on w hat others w ere saying. I’m too shy and I need time toprocess my thoughts and ideas. I can’t think “on the spot.”And, then, it w as ov er. I w asn’t particularly proud of my contribution but I wasn’t totally embarrassedeither.I’v e been back to the group tw o times since then, so far. The format is evolv ing and w e now have moretime to prepare. Though there are people in the group who are far better w riters than I’ll ev er be, they area kind and supportiv e group and I like them all. And, for now, that’s reason enough to try it again.~ Ly nda Schw artz ~LuAnn RosenzweigCongratulations to the 2013-2015 KKBE Board MembersAnita Rosenberg (2015)PresidentBen Glass (2015)V.P.
