Volume 13 Number 7 — Sivan ~ Tamuz 5771 — July 2011
Betw een Camp Coleman (in Cleveland, GA) and Kutz Camp (in
Warw ick, NY), KKBE is sending over 20 of our kids to URJ camps this
summer. Our numbers at Coleman alone put us at #4 on their
enrollment list– a remarkable achievement in a region that includes
mega-congregations in Atlanta and Florida! How indebted we are to the
Julie, Danielle and Stephen Ziff Youth Education Fund; the Bess Rosen
and Paul Rosen Camp Fund; and the Sisterhood for enabling us to
assist our families in providing this incredible experience for a growing
number of our children and teens.
Now if only our adults could take advantage of all that camp has to offer
– time away from home, in a unique URJ environment, where we can pay particular attention to
nourishing our souls and energizing our spirits. Yet such opportunities do exist. Please
consider one of tw o wonderful upcoming chances to experience and enjoy the best a Jewish
camping experience can offer:
1: Family Camp at Camp Coleman, Labor Day Weekend 2011
Rabbi Ellen Nemhauser, of Camp Coleman’s programming team, shares the following: “Family
Camp, on Labor Day Weekend at Coleman, is a beautiful time of the year in the North Georgia
Mountains. The food is great (no really—it's superb—ask those who have come up for this
special weekend). The overall ambience is one of relax ation and camaraderie. Almost all the
activ ity centers at camp are open and it's a treat to be there with the families who participate.
We provide a great getaway for all ages. My 5 year old son, Carmi, learned to kayak last year;
Wildlife Wonders came and regaled us with stories and liv e demonstrations involv ing all sorts;
we created real art and vibrant tie-died garments to bring home; enjoyed a spirited evening of
family fun with playwright and director, Mira Hirsch; and the experience of Shabbat in the
Woods for 24 hours was delightful.”
For kids (or parents) who may be a bit nervous about a first-time camping experience, this
prov ides the perfect opportunity for them to get to know the camp Director, Assistant Directors
and facilities—and for kids who already can’t wait to go back to camp, what a wonderful chance
to that which means so much to them with their families. For more information, including
registration forms, please see http://coleman.urjcamps.org/yearround/familycamp/.
2: If you prefer to trade in a cabin for a hotel room, then I hope to see you at
the 71 st URJ Biennial outside Washington, D.C., December 14-18, 2011:
A URJ Biennial is truly something every Reform Jew should experience at least once in his/her
lifetime; and many of those who have, often become hooked. Reasons abound, but my
fav orites include: the chance to pray and sing with 3,000 or so fellow worshippers; countless
learning sessions with topnotch scholars and daily concerts with outstanding musicians; some
of the best Judaica shopping around; and, as one attendee described, “a wonderful way to
remove yourself from the day to day life of volunteering for a Temple and remember why it is
that y ou do what you do.” Plus, this year’s Biennial provides the unique opportunity to meet and
hear from our new URJ President, Rabbi Rick Jacobs, at a time of great opportunity, challenge
and reflection within the Reform Mov ement. For more information, see http://urj.org/biennial/.
President’s Message
Dear Congregants,
You w on’t be reading this until July, but I am w riting it on May 16th, the day after Mitzv ah Day. I
hav e participated in them before, but I am alw ays amazed by the number of our congregants who
show up ready, willing and eager to help. Yesterday was no exception. The day started with an
assembly of all of our Religious School students and teachers, along with v olunteers ready to
begin their w ork.
Ev ery Sunday, there is a brief service for our students. Rabbi Alexander conducted this one and it
w as v ery sw eet and inspiring. She sang and played guitar and engaged the congregation in
communal w orship. Joel Crook also play ed guitar and sang an original song that reinforced the
theme of the day. Cynthia Av a, w ho began our Social Action Committee, deliv ered an inspirational
message.
Some of the children were dismissed w ith their teachers to the classroom w here they worked on projects for Mitzvah Day . Other
students w ere dismissed to their parents to go offsite to one of the agencies receiving our help. In the past, I hav e volunteered at the
Sherman House, Crisis Ministries Family Shelter, and the Neighborhood House. This year Dolly , Caroline & I remained at KKBE to
assist there. I started in one of the storerooms w here Ira Rosenberg, Caroline & I were guided by Shanna Middleton, one of our
facilities managers. We re-organized the room, restocked shelv es and cleared a lot of space. It really didn’t seem like w ork. We
enjoy ed being together and it felt good to accomplish this mundane but important task. We finished early.
Ira, Caroline & I then went to help Dolly & Anita w ho w ere cleaning out and reorganizing the pray er book storage closets. Once
again, this w as a fairly simple but important task. We found enough Union Pray er Books to fill tw o box es. We had already donated
sev eral hundred to Temple Mickv e Israel in Sav annah last y ear as we no longer use them. We w ill be sending the rest to them as
w ell. We also remov ed hundreds of Gates of Prayer (Blue) which we don’t use and will be finding suitable recipients for them. We
organized a large number of copies of Gates of Pray er (Gray ) which we use in East Cooper and other services. There are copies of
all siddurim in our library and Rabbi Alexander has retained enough copies of each to conduct study sessions in the future.
We w ent through each book indiv idually and remov ed ones w ith dedication pages involv ing congregants so those books could be
offered to those families. A few w ent to our museum. Our incredible librarian, Marlene Williamon, insisted that all damaged books be
giv en to her for repair before they w ere offered to any body . She repaired a number of them before w e could ev en finish packing
them.
So, w hat is the bottom line Unlike prev ious y ears, w hen I w ent to facilities that w ere so grateful for our presence, our labor and our
spirit, this year I did the mundane. It felt great. In some small way, our little group made our congregational home a little neater, a
little more organized and a little more cost-effectiv e (we are unpaid labor). We really enjoyed w orking together and welcoming the
others back from their off-site v isits. In the midst of this, tourists continued to v isit Chosen Treasures and the sanctuary . I w as asked
by one of them w hat all of the commotion w as about. I took great pride by responding that they w ere w itnessing the best of
congregational life. They w ere seeing the best of KKBE. All of us w ere working together for good causes, large or small. It is w hat
w e do.
Shalom,
Religious School Updates
Amy I. W. Horner, M.A., Temple Educator
School is out, and summer is in full swing. In Charleston, even those who aren’t on
vacation enjoy the longer days and the slower pace that the heat demands.
Except for the heat of high noon, summer encourages us to spend time outdoors. We can
enjoy blooming flowers, trips to the ocean, and freshly grown fruits and vegetables. It is a perfect
time to try a Jewish tradition: reciting the shehecheyanu each time you taste something for the first
time in a year or more, or see something that leaves you awestruck. You may be familiar with
reciting the shehecheyanu on the first nights of holidays, including Chanukah. But the
shehecheyanu can be said at other times, too, and like reciting the hamotzi before a meal, this
tradition transforms an everyday experience into something holy. An audio recording of the
shehecheyanu can be found on the URJ’s website: http://media.urj.org/educate/blessings/t6r4-
shehechiyanu-chanukah.mp3.
How else can we connect our summer fun to our Jewishness If you have school-age children, you have probably
received reminders about maintaining the things they have learned in school during the summer. There are summer
reading assignments for many ages, and even our youngest students are encouraged to read. The best way to maintain
reading skills, we know, is to keep reading. The best way to maintain Hebrew reading skills... is to keep reading Hebrew.
If your child takes Hebrew at KKBE, please don’t set aside his or her textbook now that summer is here! Keep it out, and
ask your child to read to you occasionally. Whether or not you read Hebrew yourself, listen, and learn along with your
child.
Summer in Charleston is a time to refresh ourselves. We can come to services on Shabbat and explore our
siddur (prayer book), the Mishkan T’filah. Adults as well as children will find Jewish books available at local bookstores
and at KKBE’s library. (Please check with volunteer librarian Marlene Williamon for hours, as KKBE’s library is not open
every day.) You will find Jewish books in the public library, too.
When August and the Hebrew month of Elul begin, our thoughts will become more serious as we prepare
ourselves for the High Holy Days and back-to-school. Registration forms for the 2011-2012 (5772) school year have been
sent home electronically, and are available on our website, www.kkbe.org. I look forward to seeing our Religious School
families on Sunday, August 21, for our annual Open House. Hebrew students and their parents have a mandatory
meeting with their teachers that day, and all students will be able to meet their Religious School teachers. Members of our
Brotherhood will be cooking pancakes for us, and if you’ve had their pancakes, you know you don’t want to miss their
cooking or the chance to enjoy breakfast with friends old and new.
I hope you have a chance to relax and renew yourself this summer!
Executive Director’s Message
Someone once told me you can’t step in the same stream twice. I think they meant that while things may appear the same
on the surface, in truth, even the smallest of changes usually make things VERY different. I have found that to be true…
and usually, I’m glad it is.
In May, KKBE began transforming. We elected a new Board of Trustees. In truth, we’re still getting to know one another.
While many of our leaders generously agreed to serve another term, there are new leaders changing the nature of our
stream. We have stepped into new waters sparkling with opportunities to work in new ways with one another as we strive
to accomplish KKBE’s mission--Torah, Avodah, and G'milut Chasadim.
I am grateful beyond words for the willing spirits of our volunteer leaders. I’m thankful for the wisdom and dedication of
leaders who have trod this path before and for the new perspectives we’ll gain from new eyes, new questions, and new
ways of working together. Our congregation has exciting challenges before us and wonderful new chances to learn
together, building a stronger Reform Jewish Congregation here on Hasell Street—as we have for over 260 years. We’ll
need your help along the way--as always.
Every one of us who work for Kahal Kadosh Beth Elohim are glad to work with such dedicated, funny, hard working KKBE
volunteer leaders—old and new alike. As our nation celebrates its independence this month, we celebrate all of YOU.
Our nation began with volunteers and KKBE, like our nation, learns, loves and serves because of men and women who
lend their time, talent and treasures to make KKBE the remarkable congregation that it is.
Please… let us know how we can help you serve our historic congregation. It is our work and our pleasure to support your
efforts. We’re counting on you to help us make KKBE all that you dream it will become. Chazak, chazak, v’nitchazek!
L’shalom,
Floy
Chazak, chazak, v’nitchazek!
Volunteer leaders and professional leaders need each other, and we have the
pow er to draw strength from one another. Together as volunteers and professionals,
w e can be powerful partners—leading our people to greater Jewish learning, deeper
Jew ish meaning and better Jewish liv ing. Ev ery Jew ish leader, whether contributing
as a volunteer or as a synagogue professional, has the power to add immeasurably
to the strength of our people. When we w ork together, with respect, with cooperation
and w ith purpose, we are able to fulfill the Torah’s instruction: Chazak, chazak,
v’nitchazek—Be strong, be strong, and we will strengthen one another.
Behind the Scenes...
Highlights of the past month.
Committees:
After the Spring meeting and election of the new Board, we got down to work! All committees
have been reviewed, additional members added when needed and statements of the goals and
purposes of each committee constructed. Committees should now have a chair, co-chair and a
group organized to work for the stated goals. If you see a committee that peaks your interest,
please call the chair, or me, and volunteer! We need everyone!
Coming Street Cemetery Restoration:
A sincere “todah rabah” to the Yaschik Foundation which awarded us a grant to begin Phase One: Mapping the Way as
we launch the restoration of our historic cemetery. Details can be seen in the June 22 nd issue of Temple Talk. Thanks to
our ED, Floy Work, who so carefully prepared our grant application. Another “thank you” is due to Mary Radin, Pat Votava
and Randi Serrins who have volunteered to join me on the Coming Street Cemetery Restoration Task Force created at the
request of Morton Ellison, Cemetery Chair. We’ll report details as we get the project underway. Just this past week, Randi
and I have taken three groups on tours of the historic cemetery. We appreciate Rabbi Sytner of BSBI who brought his
Women’s Study Group to the cemetery to learn its history and to see the graves of their early Shearith Israel congregation.
Thanks to Rabbi Alexander and office staff, our busy KKBE calendar for the coming year is now as complete as any
calendar can be! See it on-line.
And a special Mazel-tov to Rabbi Alexander on the completion of her first year with us!
Got Photos
The Confirmation Class of 5771 is collecting and framing a
timeline of KKBE confirmation class photos. They ask that
you look for photos of your confirmand's class - recent, not so
recent and historic - and send copies of the photos to the
Temple Office--marked to the attention of the Confirmation
Class. As their gift to KKBE, this year's class will frame the
photos which will then be hung in a place of honor at KKBE.
Thanks for your help, and happy photo finding!
There are multiple ways to make tax deductible legacy gifts to
KKBE. We are grateful for each one! Each form qualifies the
donor to become a member of KKBE’s Society of 1749. Each
promises to sustain KKBE’s historic congregation and assure it
can continue to fulfill its mission.
• Donors can bequeath money, real property or stocks as a
part of their wills. Donors can specify a specific KKBE fund or
help us grow our KKBE Endowment by making a gift to the
Endowment which resides at the Coastal Community
Foundation.
• There are structured lifetime giving programs which provide
flexibility in how contributions are used. One good example is
Charitable Remainder Trusts (CRT). CRTs earmark assets for
KKBE while the donor receives an income stream from the gift.
At the termination of the trust KKBE receives the “remainder” of
your donation. This is perfect for those who want to dispose of
highly appreciated assets.
If KKBE is in your will, please let us know so we may honor your
loving kindness by including you in the Society of 1749. If you
have questions, please call Floy Work, our Executive Director.
She’d love to speak with you about a legacy gift to Kahal Kadosh
