There is a saying forthis month of Purim: “Mi-she-nichnas Adar Marbim B’Simcha- –When Adar begins, we increasein joy,” or as others have suggested, "Whoever lets the spirit of Adar enter oneself in a deep waywill experience an increase in happiness." Adar is our month to be a little more laidback, a bitmore free-spirited … perhaps even a tad irreverent. Please join us for our Purim Celebration@ 7:00 pm on Wednesday, March 7 th (in costume) where the spirit of Adar will abound!L’shalom,Index of ArticlesRabbi ……………………..……….....Pg 1Temple President ……………....…..Pg 3Temple Educator…………..……..…Pg 4Executive Director………......…..…..Pg 5Sisterhood………………...….…..…..Pg 6Brotherhood……………….….…..….Pg 6VP of Administration……...……..…..Pg 7Youth Group………………………….Pg 8VP of Programs………...….…....…..Pg 9Rabbi Stephanie M. President’s MessageOy! – The CalendarThe good new s is that the Charleston Jew ish Community Calendar isov erflow ing. The bad news is that the Charleston Jew ish CommunityCalendar is ov erflow ing. Some of y ou were looking forw ard to the Tri-Congregational Koffee House, hosted by KKBE, which w as scheduled to take place in March. We needed topostpone it to avoid calendar conflicts and it w ill return near the end of 2012as that is the time frame originally planned for that ev ent.My lifelong friend, Stanley Baker, w as president of Brith Sholom Beth Israel (BSBI) w hen w e decided it w ould be nice for thepresidents of the three sy nagogues to meet on a regular basis to exchange ideas, discuss common problems and think about thingsw e could do together. At our v ery first meeting, Stanley proposed an idea: BSBI would host a classical music quartet in the w inter months and all threecongregations would sponsor it. Mark Pinosky w as president of Emanu-El (EE) at the time and he and I both agreed that it w as agreat idea. The three of us also agreed that the purpose of this event w as to get members of our congregations together and to hav eour ev ents at each of the three sy nagogues.Out of this meeting w as born the Tri-Congregational Events, now completing its second year. Generally, the plan calls for BSBI tohost a musical concert in February. We hav e done this with tw o classical /jazz / Jewish music concerts w hich were v ery wellattended. EE hosts a family oriented fun day in the summer. We hav e also done this tw ice and large crow ds were in attendance bothtimes as jump castles, face painting, penguins, alligators, and other fun stuff from S.C. Aquarium, entertained the kids while parentsand others schmoozed and snacked.Kahal Kadosh Beth Elohim (KKBE) hosts a Koffee House scheduled for Nov ember or December when Shabbat ends early enough toaccommodate Orthodox and Conservativ e congregants. Last y ear, the Barbara Pearlstine Social Hall was packed. Our staff andv olunteers did a magnificent job of redecorating the Hall to giv e it a “coffee house feel”, with sofas and tables and floor seating. For afew hours, we w ere all entertained by talented folks from all three congregations, strutting their singing, poetry , story telling, andtalents in musical instruments of all kinds. The highlight of the evening for me and many others w as a comedy skit by RabbisAlex ander, Rosenbaum and Sy tner. These events are all designed to be v ery low cost as the objectiv e is not to make money, but to break even. The three congregationshav e committed to equally sharing in any small losses. We hav e been v ery fortunate so far. The overriding purpose is to enhanceour Charleston Jew ish community , to be a little more familiar w ith the three sy nagogues and to enjoy ourselv es doing it. Eachcongregation has their “signature ev ent”We w ere not able to hav e the Koffee House this past December due to so many conflicts on the calendar. We then planned to do itthis month, but Shabbat does not end early enough to make it happen. So please keep y our ey es and ears open and look forward tothe end of 2012 w hen w e w ill once again celebrate talent in Jew ish Charleston sty le.Shalom,Dav id H. Executive Director’s MessageI don't know what your destiny will be, but one thing I know: the only ones among you who will bereally happy are those who have sought and found how to serve."-Albert SchweitzerWe hav e choices each day w e are lucky enough to open our eyes, we can choose to enjoy the day beforeus, or to see it as a compilation of tasks that bore or tire or drain us. American motiv ational speaker, DenisWaitley tells us, "There are tw o primary choices in life: to accept conditions as they ex ist, or accept theresponsibility for changing them."Volunteering is making a choice to serve-- to change the world by sharing your time and talent. Scores ofpeople v olunteered for KKBE’s 2012 Shabbaton. It w as probably lots of work, and still there w ere tons offolks smiling. Their leaders, Heide and Jim Klein, kept the v aried teams on course and encouraged them ev ery step along the w ay.Tamar BenArdout and Nancy Richek signed every one into James Island CountyPark. Robin and Rabbi Alex ander volunteered and crafted inspirational, v isual,ex periential w orship that opened our ey es and our hearts to the beauty of natureand the souls all around us. Rachel Morley, Anita Rosenberg, and FriedaBernstein made certain ev ery one ate w ell. Mustard Seed and Hy man’s donatedentire meals to make our dining easy, but better y et, delicious! (Please thank themby choosing them when y ou want to dine out.) Jim & Heide Klein w ho co-chairedthe entire ev ent, Tamar BenArdout, Jerri Chaplain, and Rabbi Alex ander createdengaging programs that connected us w ith our rituals, our language and mitzvot. Iknow I didn’t capture the names of all the KKBE members w ho pitched in, movingtables, carrying supplies, cleaning up—they know who they are. I am sure theydidn’t help for recognition. They made a choice to serv e and our heartfelt thanksgoes out to each who chose to v olunteer. The spirit of sharing and joy w asev erywhere.L’shalom, FloyAs they used to print in my hometow n, weekly paper, “a good time w as had by all” at the 2012Shabbaton. I don’t know w hat the Shabbaton v olunteers’ destinies w ill be, but I saw the happy facesof kids and grow nups who sought and found w ay s to serve our historic sy nagogue and they seemedreally happy. I think Dr. Schw eitzer would be grinning to see all KKBE’s members generouslycontributed in body and spirit.Abraham Heschel w rote, “God is hiding in the w orld. Our task is to let the div ine emerge from ourdeeds.” KKBE members did just that on President’s Day weekend. If y ou haven’t found w here YOUw ant to volunteer at KKBE, please call me at 723-1090 and w e’ll find a place w here y ou can serv ew ith joy. Please join us forYe Old Fashioned Purim ServiceWednesday, March 7th 7:00 pmBring a box of pasta (anything but long noodles) to use as agragger and then donate to the Kosher Food Pantry.ChaiLights March 2012 Adar ~ Nisan 5772 Page 5

Scholarship Application.Update on Meeting Street Academy and KKBEMeeting Street Academy (MSA) is a privately funded school in Charleston that provides a college-preparatory education for students whosefamilies care deeply about their child’s education but otherwise would be unable to afford priv ate school tuition. MSA believes that allchildren have the potential to achieve greatness if giv en the right educational opportunities. They recognize that young children from allbackgrounds are enthusiastic learners, especially when provided with the right environment in which to grow and learn. By providing suchan environment, MSA affords its students the opportunity to attain the skills and knowledge necessary to succeed in school and in life. One of the many “ex tras” MSA offers to its students that add to their academic and social success is the Mentor Program. Through this, students are paired w ith upstanding men and women from the community who serve as friends and role models to the students. Last y ear,the program was started with about ten mentors and was a great success. This y ear, the program has almost thirty mentors, both male andfemale, who meet w ith their mentees weekly. Mentors have lunch w ith their mentee, work on academics, play games, read books, or simplyhav e a conversation.Sev eral KKBE members volunteer as mentors at MSA: Sandra Bregman, Amy Frain, Cynthia Greene, Jim Klein, and Paul Sykes. The timeand energy they dedicate to Meeting Street Academy and its students is helping to positiv ely influence each of their mentees; helping toensure that those students succeed both socially and academically; and giving those students another person to look up to and count on.Meeting Street Academy is truly grateful for the support from the KKBE congregation – even the KKBE Youth Group volunteers monthly atMSA. If you are interested in learning more about or volunteering as a mentor at Meeting Street Academy, please contact Jim Klein atjklein@charlestonlaw.edu or Jean McDowell, Director of Resources for MSA, at jmcdowell@msa.us.com or 735-7102.ChaiLights March 2012 Adar ~ Nisan 5772 Page 9
