In the 65y ears since the end of the Second World War w ith itsw idespread Nazis atrocities, one strong reaction can besummarized with the w ords, “Never again!”Volume 12 Number 4 — Nisan ~ Iyar 5770 — April 2010If w e are serious about preventing such human-causedcatastrophes from ev er happening again, we must lookinto the causes of the European Holocaust. In particular we can note that the Naziscame to pow er in a society w hich was accustomed to authoritarian government andin w hich they established a terrify ingly efficient dictatorship. The third Reich is aperpetual reminder of the dev astating consequences of idolizing authority and stiflingdissent. The alternativ e to a totalitarian or even an authoritarian society is surely one thatbuilds upon the rights of each indiv idual, the essential basis of all democracies.Contemporary democracies include the U.S., the diverse countries in the EuropeanUnion, and Israel. As a viv id reminder of the contrast betw een the horrors ofdictatorship and the potential benefits of a democracy, it is surely fitting that 8 day safter Holocaust Remembrance Day (April 11) we Jews celebrate Israel’sindependence (April 19).With all the controv ersies that rack much of our American society today , with all thedifficulties that Israel has in arriv ing at a consensus which might enable it to finallymov e tow ards a permanent peace agreement w ith its Palestine neighbors who areev en more div ided, - w e w ould do w ell to remind ourselves of the thought WinstonChurchill once stated, that democracy is the w orst possible form of government untilw e consider the alternativ es.As Americans and as Jews w e have all come a long way since 1945 w hen the w orldw ar ended and 1948 when Israel became independent. In celebrating Israel’s manyachiev ements, let us reaffirm our commitment to strengthen all societies that affirmthe rights of indiv iduals and encourage div ersity .Ev en more important than: “Nev er again,” is the enduring Passov er message:“Let my people go!”Rabbi Anthony D. HolzOur Mission StatementThe mission of Kahal Kadosh Beth Elohim shall be to serve the religious needs offamilies and individuals through programs of lifelong Jewish education (Torah), inclusivecommunal worship and ritual (Avodah), and the ongoing quest for greater justice, peace and acts of loving-kindness (Gemilut Chasadim).KKBE 90 Ha s ell St reet , Ch a rl est o n , S C 29 4 0 1 T el . Religious School UpdatesAmy I. W. Horner, M.A., Temple EducatorLast month’s Purim celebration was a wonderful start to spring, in spite of itbeing a little chillier than our usual Charleston Purim! Our service was ably led byRobin Shuler and Ian Rastogi, with a special appearance by Rabbi Holz andparticipation by our Hebrew students. Thank you to all who helped with the serviceand all who came in costume and helped drown out Haman’s name! With Pesach underway, spring is really here. Our houses might have gottencleaned for Pesach, and we have the opportunity to celebrate with family andfriends, pausing to reflect on the importance of freedom for ourselves and others.Matzah crumbs aside, Pesach gives us the chance to be grateful for the many goodthings in our lives. Both Purim and Pesach include helping those less fortunate among the traditional mitzvot(commandments) for the holiday. The coming month will give all of us at KKBE a chance to do just thatas we participate in Mitzvah Day on May 2. Religious school is in session that day, with Hebrew classesfrom 9:00 – 10:00. All students, and parents, are asked to come to school at 10:00 for a special MitzvahDay service in the Sanctuary. Students going off-site with their parents will leave after the service;those not going off-site will participate in projects with their classmates and teachers. The month of May includes Mother’s Day, a chance for us to show gratitude to our mothers andoften, to the other women in our lives who nurture us. This May we will also have an opportunity toexpress our appreciation to Rabbi Holz as we celebrate his tenure at KKBE. On Saturday May 8 at11:00 a.m., our students will lead the Shabbat morning service in honor of our Rabbi and his years ofwarm and wise service to our children and our synagogue. Please make every effort to have your childhere and to join us for services as we show our appreciation to Rabbi Holz.Dates to Remember:April 4April 11May 2May 8No schoolNo schoolKKBE Mitzvah Day- School is in session at 9:00 for Hebrew students, 10:00 for Religious School- students may participate with their parents off-site, or attend school and participatewith classmates.Shabbat morning service led by our students in honor of Rabbi HolzPage 4 ChaiLights • April 2010 • Nisan ~ Iyar 5770

Executive Director’s MessageGetting ReadyIt’s that time again, isn’t it? For thousands of years we have counted the Omer—the days between Passover and Shavuot, which traditionally commemorates thegiving of the Torah—the time between slavery and freedom. We are counting thedays here at the Temple Office, too, but for different reasons. We are counting the days and looking forward to our weekend of tributes to RabbiHolz and Judy. What a terrific weekend it will be! We will have a wonderfulcongregational dinner, a special Shabbat Family Service, a memorable Shabbat morning service led bymembers of our Religious School, and a Chai Salute that kicks off with cocktails and ends with dancingand dessert. Please put all these important events and times in your calendars. And don’t forget tosend your tributes (special memories of Rabbi Holz and Judy) to tributebook@gmail.com.We’re preparing for Rabbi Alexander’s arrival, too. We want to make it easy to get to know us. Becausea person's name is the single context of human memory most likely to be forgotten; because selfdisclosureis the single most effective way to build rapport and connect with people you just met; andbecause initiating the conversation is half the battle – a name tag can be a great help in making newrabbis, new visitors and new members feel like part of our KKBE Family. Did you know our growingcongregation now has 471 member households—nearly 1200 individuals! That’s a lot of names to learn! So we are creating nametags for the congregation. That should help Rabbi Alexander (and everyonewho is new to our KKBE family) have visual clues describing who we are and what we do. We’re addinggroups to the nametag boards as time permits. Below is the color code. It will appear in announcementsheets each week.Board members have cream nametags,Sisterhood has pink nametags,Brotherhood has blue nametags,Committee Chairs have green nametagsKoleinu has yellowDocents have grey andMembers have white. There are BIG boards in the Lobby where our nametags will hang. They are (roughly) alphabetized bylast name. If you don’t find your nametag, feel free to sign up for one (if you are comfortable) on theclipboard on the Lobby Table, or you can call the Temple Office on Monday. As soon as you let us know,we’ll make you a nametag and hang it on the board.Preparing for change helps us assure we say farewell and hello in ways that honor our treasured friends.L’ Shalom,YÄÉçNisan ~ Iyar 5770 • April 2010 • ChaiLights Page 5

Our Temple YouthChecking in withApril means Spring! And that means many of us will be spending time away from KKBE, and enjoying Spring Break withour families. CHARLEY will only be getting together once in the lounge this month. On April 18th, we will be hosting membersof the youth groups from some of the local churches. They'll be attending a Religious School service and then joiningus for our monthly Pizza in the Lounge. But remember, the CHARLEY lounge is there for members whenever they justneed a place to hang out.April also means it's time for SPRING KALLAH, April 23-25th. This is NFTY SAR's (National Federation of Temple YouthSouthern Area Region) last regional event of the year. That means it's the last regional event ever for our seniors. Thisyear it's in Jacksonville, where some of our favorite friends live. We're trying very hard to get lots of members to attend(I'm hoping for 20), but that means WE NEED DRIVERS! Every time we jump on the bus from Charlotte to attend an out oftown event, it costs us $60.00 per person. I'd like to spend that money on local programming, so we really need folks tobring some kids to Jacksonville, or come and pick them up, or both. It's a small but meaningful way to support your TempleYouth Group. If you can drive, please let me know. And remember that only 9th through 12th graders can attend out oftown events. But you don't need to have a child that's a member to help us out. It's so important to create meaningful Jewishmoments for these very active members of our congregation. Please help, if you can.Remember, if you ever want to see what's coming up for CHARLEY, or pictures of what's gone down, you can always goto www.mycharley.com. It's constantly updated with our latest information. If you're not in CHARLEY,למא לא ? Lo why not? TemporarilyRestricted Funds are available, but they can only be used for a donor-selected purpose, like the Camp ColemanScholarship Fund or the Coming Street Cemetery Restoration Fund. Permanently Restricted Funds must be maintainedby the Congregation in perpetuity. They have specific uses, too—the Addie I. Triest Floral Fund is a perfect example—andthe funds’ uses never expire. KKBE may use only a portion of their net assets. All of our funds grow because generouscongregants make donations earmarked for a specific fund. Below is some information about one of our 30+ funds.Featured Fund:The Lois and Lowell Sugarman Hospitality Fund--A “New” Fund is Born!KKBE has a plethora of funds, over thirty! We have funds for camperships and gardens and kitchens and scholarshipsand lectures and videos and buildings and cemeteries and…well, you get the idea. While it is wonderful to rememberthose we love with named funds, from an administration viewpoint, accounting for each fund on a monthly basis is, frankly, daunting.Because of the bookkeeping complexities our many funds create, in the Temple Office we dream of “blending” funds, finding ways to honor those we love while reducing the number of funds accounted for each month.Recently, Lois Sugarman generously agreed to ‘marry’ the Sugarman Kiddush Fund with our Hospitality Fund, creating theLois and Lowell Sugarman Hospitality Fund. Todah rabah, Lois! Lois shared that Lowell loved Kiddush so much hewould often provide refreshments for Kiddush here at KKBE.Contributions to the Sugarman Hospitality Fund are dedicated to providing refreshments for Onegs and Kiddushim thatare not sponsored by KKBE’s members. Why not send a contribution to the Sugarman Hospitality Fund today?
