Regional <strong>climate</strong> <strong>change</strong> activities<br />

• Build<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> effects <strong>of</strong> <strong>climate</strong> <strong>change</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>frastructure development plann<strong>in</strong>g (projects <strong>in</strong><br />

pipel<strong>in</strong>e):<br />

• Disaster preparedness capacity development at community level <strong>in</strong> BCI sites.<br />

These activities are <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> prepara<strong>to</strong>ry phase.<br />

8.5 Study on <strong>climate</strong> impact adaptation and mitigation <strong>in</strong> Asian coastal<br />

mega cities<br />

The Asian Development Bank (ADB), <strong>the</strong> World Bank (WB) and <strong>the</strong> JBIC Institute are<br />

collaborat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> carry out an assessment on <strong>the</strong> impacts <strong>of</strong> <strong>climate</strong> <strong>change</strong> on four major<br />

coastal cities <strong>in</strong> Asia <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g Bangkok (World Bank, 2005) and Ho Chi M<strong>in</strong>h City (ICEM,<br />

2009). A separate study was conducted for each coastal city with a syn<strong>the</strong>sis report <strong>to</strong> evaluate<br />

similarities and differences <strong>of</strong> results, and <strong>to</strong> identify common approaches <strong>to</strong> adaptation, which<br />

could be applied <strong>to</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r coastal cities<br />

Each study addresses three major questions (i) what environmental, social and economic<br />

effects are expected due <strong>to</strong> <strong>climate</strong> <strong>change</strong>, and what is <strong>the</strong> projected magnitude <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se<br />

impacts; (ii) what adaptation measures could each city employ <strong>to</strong> address <strong>the</strong> threats and related<br />

impacts; and (iii) what are <strong>the</strong> key policy priorities for decision-makers <strong>to</strong> deal with <strong>the</strong> threats.<br />

The HCMC study (ICEM, 2009) has developed a range <strong>of</strong> adaptation <strong>to</strong>ols and options which<br />

will be replicated <strong>in</strong> a wider adaptation project <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Mekong</strong> Delta supported by AusAID and<br />

ADB.<br />

8.6 S<strong>to</strong>ckholm Environment Institute (SEI)<br />

The S<strong>to</strong>ckholm Environment Institute is undertak<strong>in</strong>g and plann<strong>in</strong>g a range <strong>of</strong> <strong>climate</strong> <strong>change</strong><br />

activities with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> LMB, which have potential l<strong>in</strong>kages <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> MRC CCAI. These <strong>in</strong>clude:<br />

• Develop<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong>ols <strong>to</strong> analyse data for decision mak<strong>in</strong>g through <strong>the</strong> Water Evaluation and<br />

Plann<strong>in</strong>g System (WEAP) and <strong>the</strong> Climate Change Explorer (CCE);<br />

• Exam<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> extent <strong>to</strong> which water-related issues <strong>in</strong>fluences levels <strong>of</strong> poverty through<br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>Mekong</strong> Bas<strong>in</strong> Focal Project;<br />

• Facilitat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> establishment <strong>of</strong> partnerships for adaptation through <strong>the</strong> Regional Climate<br />

<strong>Adaptation</strong> Knowledge Platform (with UNEP);<br />

• Build<strong>in</strong>g capacity for research & communication through technical support <strong>to</strong> ACCCA<br />

and <strong>to</strong>o much/<strong>to</strong>o little water projects.<br />
