Regional <strong>climate</strong> <strong>change</strong> activities<br />

CARE is creat<strong>in</strong>g new conceptual models and participa<strong>to</strong>ry methodologies <strong>to</strong> address <strong>the</strong><br />

effects <strong>of</strong> <strong>climate</strong> <strong>change</strong>. For example, our Climate Vulnerability and Capacity Assessment <strong>to</strong>ol<br />

helps stakeholders:<br />

• Identify especially vulnerable regions and communities;<br />

• Understand <strong>the</strong> consequences <strong>of</strong> <strong>climate</strong> <strong>change</strong> for different social groups with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>se<br />

communities;<br />

• Design projects that provide immediate benefits and build adaptive capacity for fur<strong>the</strong>r<br />

<strong>climate</strong> <strong>change</strong>.<br />

Some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> key projects that CARE is work<strong>in</strong>g on <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> LMB that relate <strong>to</strong> <strong>climate</strong> <strong>change</strong><br />

are:<br />

Cambodia<br />

Food/livelihood security and emergency response Is work<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> 5 prov<strong>in</strong>ces <strong>to</strong> address underly<strong>in</strong>g causes<br />

<strong>of</strong> rural poverty and degradation <strong>of</strong> natural resources.<br />

Integrated rural development: food and livelihood<br />

security and gender<br />

Community-led <strong>in</strong>novation <strong>in</strong> drought preparedness<br />

and mitigation<br />

Integrated rural development & disaster mitigation<br />

project (IRDM)<br />

Lao PDR<br />

Is work<strong>in</strong>g with rural women <strong>to</strong> play a central role <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g <strong>climate</strong> <strong>change</strong> adaptive capacity <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

family and community.<br />

As part <strong>of</strong> a regional programme, communities <strong>in</strong><br />

Baphnom district, Prey Veng prov<strong>in</strong>ce are provided<br />

with technical support <strong>to</strong> undertake preparedness<br />

plann<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

The project targets some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> poorest and most<br />

vulnerable communes <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> prov<strong>in</strong>ces Prey Veng and<br />

Svay Rieng <strong>of</strong> Sou<strong>the</strong>ast Cambodia that are some <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> most disaster-prone prov<strong>in</strong>ces. Village level efforts<br />

aimed at promot<strong>in</strong>g Disaster Risk Management (DRM)<br />

are <strong>in</strong>corporated with<strong>in</strong> longer term rural development<br />

<strong>in</strong>itiatives targeted at poverty reduction.<br />

Poverty alleviation <strong>in</strong> remote upland areas Is work<strong>in</strong>g with remote, poor, ethnic communities<br />

and local government partners <strong>to</strong> improve livelihoods<br />

and resilience and <strong>in</strong>crease food security <strong>of</strong> poor<br />

households. Includ<strong>in</strong>g exploration <strong>of</strong> potential <strong>of</strong><br />

renewable energies <strong>in</strong> household poverty reduction.<br />
