A new team assembles to serve the Lakewood community. Elyria Office Mission Hospice of the Western Reserve provides palliative end-of-life care, caregiver support, and bereavement services throughout Northern Ohio. In celebration of the individual worth of each life, we strive to relieve suffering, enhance comfort, promote quality of life, foster choice in end-of-life care, and support effective grieving.
H. Clark Harvey, Jr. President David A. Simpson Chief Executive Officer Hospice of the Western Reserve’s mission of compassion and support for patients and caregivers continues to manifest itself in new ways and in new settings. The organization continues to adapt in order to assure that no one in our community is alone, afraid or in pain during their crowning phase of life. This report highlights our accomplishments during 2005 that demonstrate the breadth and depth of our efforts to serve our community. In the area of direct care, several milestones were reached. Our overall daily census reached 1,100 patients. We served more than 6,000 patients during the year. Hospice House celebrated its tenth anniversary, and by year-end admitted over 10,000 patients. Our palliative care program expanded significantly, serving 638 patients and reaching a daily census of 150. With the support of the St. Luke’s Foundation, we deepened our understanding and knowledge of dementia with a comprehensive agency-wide education program and outreach initiative focusing on Alzheimer’s disease and related diagnoses. Finally, we expanded our capacity by developing a new west side team and opening an office in Lakewood. During 2005 our outreach and partnering continued to expand. We joined Business Volunteers Unlimited. Our Caregiver Guide and advertising campaign were translated into Spanish and have been very well received. Our advocacy concerning advance directives was significant, stimulated in part by the plight of Terry Schiavo. Our staff provided many presentations and served on multiple panels concerning this topic. In addition, we distributed 6,575 copies of our advance directives booklet, Courage in Conversation. From a human resource perspective, we implemented a wellness program for staff and instituted a no smoking program making all our workplaces and our work day smoke free. We are pleased that our turnover rate for the year was less than one percent per month and we are proud that several national awards were conferred on our staff. In addition, we are proud that our staff exhibited exceptional generosity by organizing fundraisers for the tsunami and Hurricane Katrina victims, and for support of Helderberg Hospice, our sister hospice in South Africa. Hospice House was significantly enhanced with the completion of the shoreline development project and the Ames Family Viewing Deck. Through the year we believe that we served the community well through the provision of excellent hospice and palliative care by our 44 teams, important education services offered through the Hospice Institute, and compassionate bereavement support through the Elisabeth Severance Prentiss Bereavement Center. We look forward to continuing our service in the coming years. As a final note, we remember two of our team members who died during 2005. We are grateful to Gayle Williams, Office Cleaner and Kathy Kahn-Denis, Community Relations Coordinator for the dedication and commitment they demonstrated on behalf of our mission. H.
