The Palliative Care Team served 638 patients, with 56% discharged
Palliative care
Many people who suffer from lifelimiting
illnesses are not ready for
hospice care or do not choose it. These
patients, who often endure years of
chronic pain or debilitating symptoms
deserve the same comprehensive
care that hospice provides. Palliative
care extends the principles of hospice
to patients who could benefit from
enhanced quality of life by easing
suffering and upholding choices in
end-of-life care. Hospice care and
palliative care share the same core
values and philosophies, however, the
Palliative Care Program may be used
at any time in conjunction with other
therapies or when seeking aggressive
treatments. Healthcare professionals
who specialize in palliative care work
closely with staff and volunteers to
address all the symptoms, with the aim
of promoting comfort and dignity.
Teen volunteers regularly come to Hospice
caring smiles bring joy as they deliver dinners
to patients choosing to eat in their rooms, while others greet patients and visitors
in the atrium. Many family members and visitors appreciate the chance to enjoy
a home cooked meal without having to leave Hospice House.
“Always be proud and excited about your volunteer services. It doesn’t matter what
